Steve Garfield wonders why Newbury Street drivers can't pass on their parking time from those new computerized meters - and says the city's two-hour minimum requirement breaks the contracts most people have with their credit-card companies.
Their lead story today, about state psychiatric hospitals not taking new admissions starting tomorrow, was on UH on Sunday (and then mainly as a link to Paul Levy's post).
A few minutes after the statement was made, the text was all over the websites of most of the supported housing programs that will get funding cuts. But that's a little different than someone realizing that the meters might violate a law.

Use quarters, people, if you don't want to get charged for more time than you use!!!!!!!!
There is an added convenience to being allowed to use dollar bills and credit cards.
This added convenience comes at a cost.
Jeez.
Do the meters take dollar coins?

Yes.

Yes, it still takes quarters.
I really hope the Globe gave

I really hope the Globe gave Steve some credit, since they basically took the idea of his post for an article in today's paper.

But that's just a press release, not an original thought

If you think the city is going to start allowing you to make a $.25 deposit on your debit or credit card, you are mistaken.
They'll just take away the option of allowing you to use your credit card.
Thanks for that!
does MBTA CharlieTicket have a minimum credit card purchase?
By Ron Newman - 11/21/06 - 1:28 pm
If it does, it's not obvious to me.
I think it's 60 cents

that they're disabling debit & credit cards altogether on the new meters until they figure out what to do about these rules.
