Funny, you should mention this. There are two guys right now who are wrapping up a 50-day quest to see all 50 state capitals. They are finishing up in the next day or so. They are hitch50.com. Their adventures have been documented on their website.

not really a hitchhiker

I'd be willing to bet $100 that I know who the hitchhiker is: Don Saklad. He's a local, and not quite right in the head. For evidence, see a number of ne.* postings where his odd writing style and quirky personality mix to provide much humour to other readers of the groups.
