Lawyer: Brighton home-invasion suspect is an honor student who would never do something like that

Attorneys for two of the four teens charged with a Brighton home invasion last month asked for relatively low bail, saying the Cambridge College students would never pull a knife on a teen in his own kitchen.

Christine O'Brien told Brighton District Court Judge David Driscoll that Peter Matthews, 18, of Brighton, has a clean record, graduated Brighton High, where he was an honor student and was currently a student at Cambridge College. She said he had been working at Whole Foods, but gave that up to devote full time to his school work. She pointed to his mother, sitting in court and asked for bail of no more than $10,000 bail.

Anthony S. Gilbert, 19, of Allston, is also a student at Cambridge College, in the management program, and also has no record, his lawyer said, adding he lives at home with his mother. He requested bail of $5,000.

Driscoll, however, agreed with prosecutors to set bail for each at $100,000 - the same bail he set last week for the two other suspects.

Innocent, etc.
