pinwheeling terns

pinwheeling ternsThis photo doesn't really do justice to the bizarre thing those of us on the Rte. 9 side of our office building saw around 4 p.m. - hundreds of seagulls or terns pinwheeling above the Sudbury Reservoir. Sure, seagulls aren't that uncommon out in Southborough, but not so many, and not so many all flying in circles together. Gah, is it: DEATH FROM ABOVE? I just looked out my window: There aren't as many of them now, but the ones that are there are still flying round and round, just waiting for me to try to get to my car ...

I'm not sure if those are seagulls, or terns for that matter.

Are they squaking up a loud racket ? I lived by the resevoir in Cleveland Circle for a few years and each January/February some black migratory birds of unknown species would setup shop amongst the nearby trees. The would circle (much like you describe), were loud as hell and would crap up a storm all over the neighborhood.

Keep us posted if you find out what they are. I'd be very curious since by the looks of your picture, they are the same.

No way to hear them. Will see if I have any closer photos of 'em later (that inset photo is from the flock, though).

Some more photos (yes, I managed to make it to the car and home without getting pecked to death):

Something similar happened at my parents house in NJ last fall. Thousands upon thousands of birds flocking and squawking and circling. Very freaky. A few minutes later they were gone.

This whole thing is too scary. Birds flocking bizarrely in Boston, birds dying in droves in Austin, a really weird smell throughout Manhattan. It's the end of the world. I just know it.

I'd keep them out of it - they have a history of weird smells:
