You can bank on it

John Daley writes that customer service at Sovereign Bank is terrible:

... Citizens has a well deserved reputation for great service. Sovereign, in my experience anyway, has been appallingly bad.

John, meet Mike Mennonno, who might might beg to differ about the quality of customer service at the green bank after the work the bank put him through to withdraw $25 after he lost his ATM card.

And down here at Chez Gaffin, we have our own issues, with Peoples Federal Savings Bank (yes, it's a real bank). We've generally had good experiences with the bank, to which we fled after Citizens started charging us fees on the free account we'd had at US Trust before Citizens gobbled them up. But Nancy discovered today that their "Free Checking for Life" checking account is really only free checking for life if you make deposits or withdrawals or even account queries every so often (exactly how often seems to depend on whom you talk to at the bank) - otherwise they start charging you $1 a month for your "free" account.

I've always been happy with Mount Washington Bank, a small local bank that has just a few branches in Southie and Dorchester. The tellers at the branch on Gallivan Boulevard know me by sight, are wicked nice, and have on occasion let me get away with depositing a really sketchy-looking freelance check in as "payroll." I got my mortgage through them. They rock.

Bank of America, on the other hand, are hellish filth-beasts who ruined my credit for six months over a shiteing $50 charge, without so much as sending me a postcard to let me know I owed them money. A story which I should one day write down. (Moral: Thou shalt not entrust unto the Store of Bad Lesbian Pornography the Card of Credit from the Bank of America.)
