The governor and his transportation

Carpundit, no fan of Deval Patrick, won't criticize him for his Cadillac:

... Is it the Boston Herald creating this controversy, or are state Republicans really trying to use this as an issue? Because the former is rational. The latter is just stupid.

"Post 9/11 World" only applies to wealthy neoconservatives?

By SwirlyGrrl (not verified) | Fri, 02/16/2007 - 11:34am

Privileged things the neocons the Herald loves do are a-ok because it is a "post 9/11 world" or just plain fitting with their power and status. Anything democrats do because top security folks are warning them it isn't safe to use the T or fly commercial transport (Pelosi) since they are logical terrorist targets suddenly becomes scandal of privilege.

Interesting.

Let's just raise local taxes...

It just looks bad regardless of whether it is or not. Let us see the list that they could choose then we can decide if that's the same choice we would make for our family if we were in the same financial position as the state.

What's Next? Escalades for all of the State Park Department vehicles?

What did Romney Drive?

By Swirlygrrl (not verified) | Fri, 02/16/2007 - 2:25pm

Oh yeah. He was too rich to even bother with a salary. Too bad Deval actually uses the perks that are due to him. We need another clueless presidental candidate to neither run the state nor let his Desperate Housewife of a Leut run it either.

That's who you must want running the state - people with so much money and trust funds they don't even and have never even had to think about all the piddly little concerns of the small people.

Mansion vs. Leased Car?

Bring on the real estate anyday please...once the caddy's lease is up, we'll have nada to show for it except of course for the mileage penalty bill.

Gov. Patrick -- not exactly a common man...

That's who you must want running the state - people with so much money and trust funds they don't even and have never even had to think about all the piddly little concerns of the small people.

Our fine governor's bank account isn't hurting whn there is enough income to service 5.9 million dollars in mortgages. And who wants one of those state provided mansions when you can afford two of your own.

And guess what, when CEOs are frugal, it makes the office manager think twice. But if the CEO is flying first class while guzzling bottles of bubbly, you'll end up with $12 rulers.

What do I want? I want a leader that shows that liberal governing can be done with fiscal responsibility.

Dumb-ass

By Wicked Mass-hole (not verified) | Fri, 02/16/2007 - 4:18pm

I’m no fan of Twitt Romney but he is a self-made man, a-hole maybe but not clueless. There is no trust fund for Twitt he made it himself. The guy is a very successful entrepreneur, (that means self employed business man). To disagree with his politics is American; to speak ignorantly on someone’s accomplishments and downplay their success is jealousy. BTW, there is a remedial writing course at Revere Beach College of Hairdressing, look into taking it.

Mitt is Self Made?

By JCS (not verified) | Fri, 02/16/2007 - 6:33pm

Self made? Mitt's dad ran a car company and was Governor of Michigan. I daresay Mitt may have had a few advantages that most self made men (and women) can only dream about.

A better message

While it certainly may be reasonable for Governor Patrick to ride around in a Cadillac, it would certainly send a strong message about the seriousness of his politics if he were to ride in a gas-electric hybrid car instead.

By Anon (not verified) | Sat, 02/17/2007 - 1:14am

it would seriously send a message if he would ride around in the same car the previous governors rode in, rather than a luxury car with heated seats. his rational (sp) for riding in a caddy is that the crown vic had not heat. that is very hard to believe. and as far as romney, like him or nor, he made his own fortune. bain capital was his company. patrick is as rich as, if not richer, than romney. i guess a crown victoria is below his standards. also, i loved how he blamed the stated police when questioned on his new car.

By Bob (not verified) | Sat, 02/17/2007 - 10:55am

patrick is as rich as, if not richer, than romney.

Despite being utterly irrelevant, that's just a plain ol' lie. Now I couldn't find any figures for their respective net worths, but this article makes it pretty clear where things stand.

So you're just making things up.

i loved how he blamed the stated police when questioned on his new car.

Another dishonest statement. Firt off, the state police spokesman released their own report. And secondly, if what they've been saying is just the facts, how can that be construed as "blaming someone else"?

This stuff is the definition of ad hominem...people who have nothing substantive to say, making things up and impugning someone's character.

This is what the media comes

This is what the media comes up with when the Governor is too busy doing his job to entertain them with staged PR events.

By Bob (not verified) | Sat, 02/17/2007 - 2:18pm

I don't pretend to be an expert on the duties of First Ladies or other spouses of elected officials, but I think it's fairly well accepted that they have some. I see nothing wrong with such a person having an executive assistant of some kind.

Is that person paid too much? Maybe, maybe not. Unless you know the details of the job description, hours, and qualifications, you probably know no more than I.

Again, this is just very silly criticism that I imagine only comes up because critics have nothing substantive to say about the Governor's policies or actual job performance.

By Anon (not verified) | Sat, 02/17/2007 - 7:11pm

she is not the first lady of the united states. i cant ever remember the previous five first ladies and man (chuck hunt) requiring a chief of staff. this is a political reward for one of his fundraisers.
the reason why the car and the 72k wife secretary are signifigant is because he is cutting each department's personnel by 5-10 percent. he is also raising the meals tax. he expects people to lose their jobs and pay more taxes while he is LEASING (he strikes quite a baragain) a car for 1200/month and paying someone 72k to do nothing.

Considering Mrs. Gov has a full time job as an attorney, how much time can she really have to be scheduled?

I've had $8 an hour interns that could definitely do the job...but of course I'm not sure how successful they are at political fundraising. In all serious though, I cannot imagine that the job couldn't be accomplished via a couple hours a week from another staffmember.

Romney used SUV's not the crown vic

By potroast (not verified) | Sun, 02/18/2007 - 6:03am

1. Romney was driven around in Ford Excursions, not the Crown Vic.

2. The choice the State Police gave Patrick to replace the Crown Vic (the one with 90,000 miles on it) was between the Cadillac or a Chrysler. The Chrysler would have cost only $9000 less, so maybe the State would ahve saved a couple of hundred dollars per month. Whooppe fucking do.

Compare the Caddy to the cost of the Ford Excursion Romney was driven around in if you want to compare. This is s typical of the Herald to completely screw up a st

still, wouldn't a Civic Hybrid be a better idea?

Screw what the State Police want. The Governor should set a good example by using a fuel-efficient car.

i think a suv is appropriate

By Anon (not verified) | Sun, 02/18/2007 - 12:48pm

i think a suv is appropriate in the region. i would have less of a problem if he had leased an escalade (4 wheel drive). as far as the state police giving him two choices - thats bullshit. he is the governor. he said that they stopped making crown vics. that is insane.
the reason he wouldnt drive a hybrid is, i assume, is that its difficult to equip it with all the necessary lights, sirens, police radios etc. also, a hybrid would definitely be a safety/security concern - not enough pickup.

1. From the Globe -- Romney

By Anon (not verified) | Sun, 02/18/2007 - 12:08pm

1. From the Globe --

Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said Romney also used sport utility vehicles in special situations.

"Depending on the circumstance, both Deval Patrick and Mitt Romney have access through the State Police to special-use vehicles, such as large capacity SUVs," Fehrnstrom said. "But those are not their regular autos, and they are used infrequently."

2. Why are you comparing him to Romney? Stop diverting from the real issue. He's the head of the government. If he had told the state police to keep looking, they would have.

He told every one of his departments to cut 5 to 10 per cent of their budget. The he proceeds to increase his costs. $200 a month is $200 a month. Also a $500 one time cost to fix the heater is a heck of a lot cheaper than $1166 a month. Driving that Crown Vic until it fell apart going up the Hill to the State House would have sent a message that he's serious about getting the finances under control.

Heck, just commandeer the SUV that Romney supposdely used on special occassions. That vehicle should still be around.

And above all, stop leasing these vehicles. Someone is laughing all the way to the bank. I wonder who has these vehicle contracts?

If your family was spending more than it made and needed a new vehicle, what would you do? Even with limited choices, the sane answer is keep the costs as low as possible.

why not lease? why cut your own budget? it's typical of all politicians to " do as i say, not as i do". it's even more typical of liberal politicans to do the aforementioned, plus raise taxes.

Deval antes up for the bling mobile.

By Anon (not verified) | Tue, 02/20/2007 - 8:52pm

Nice to see that our fine Governor has come around to see another point of view

"All weekend long, I have been struggling with the budget constraints we are facing in the Commonwealth," Patrick said in a statement issued after 5 p.m. "There are tough choices to make. I realize I cannot in good conscience ask the agencies to make those choices without being willing to make them myself."

I'm worried that it took so much public pressure for him to change his mind on such a straightforward issue, but I can give him the benefit of the doubt *for now*. Don't let it happen again.

Patrick said he would also pay the state $27,387 for new furnishings in the governor's office.

Wouldn't you love to get a load of those furnishings...

Open Governent? Another Failed Deval Promise.

By Anon (not verified) | Wed, 02/21/2007 - 10:27am

Are they kidding? From the Globe's article today, February 21:

Aides declined to permit a Globe photographer to photograph the new furniture or the draperies, hung at the enormous windows overlooking Boston Common.

...

The governor's aides declined to provide a breakdown of the costs of the furniture. An administration source who asked not to be named confirmed that the drapes cost $10,000.

Now, I feel like stories are being spun to fit the moment:

In his statement, Patrick said he replaced items that Romney had personally owned and taken with him when he left office. But Romney left behind drapes, a desk, and other furniture, according to Eric Fehrnstrom, a spokesman for the former governor. Kyle Sullivan, Patrick's press secretary, later said that the drapes left behind had fallen off the wall because of crumbling plaster.

Now, let's see the social secretary replaced with a part time *volunteer* from the supporters and then we can get down to the real work of fixing this state.

Oh, give it up already!

By Bob (not verified) | Wed, 02/21/2007 - 11:22am

I think we get your point: Penny-pinching begins at home.

I think we also get where you're coming from. You don't like the Governor anyway, so you're going to annoy us by pointing out every little thing you can.

Can we let this thread die now?
