Hey, there! Log in / Register

My name is Adam Gaffin and Glenn Ordway can bite me

As I type this, Glenn Ordway and his pals are ripping Universal Hub for the Cedric Maxwell story. Bloggers are irresponsible, unlike the "real" media - except for the Herald's Jesse Noyes who must be a blogger in disguise, because he wrote about it. Bloggers hide behind anonymity. Bloggers never get things right.

Oh, and our original post here about Maxwell was wrong because Maxwell was clearly imitating Tommy Heinsohn (thanks for playing the clip over and over, Glenny).

And now they're yelling about how we need to regulate the JerkWeekly.com's of the world (hmm, good idea for a domain)

Glenn, bite me as hard as you want with your toothless, drooling gums. Whether Maxwell was imitating Heinsohn or not, he said what he said. I'm not sure which is worse, actually: Him saying it or him thinking that's something Heinsohn would have said.

Adam Gaffin, you're the man. Not sure when it turned over, but WEEI isn't about sports anymore.

Adam you are being talked about on WMVP (ESPN 1000) in Chicago.

What they find hysterical is that it took a blogger to mention it and they suspect the reason is about 22 people listen to Celtics games on the radio.

Of course one of the hosts took issue with the name universalhub.com saying it just proves Bostonians think the universe revolves around us.

I can see how they would be upset...I mean, Boston has only had that nickname since 1858. And Oliver Wendell Holmes was obviously not writing satirically at all. I blame the Liberal Media ;)

Well, the Windy City has to blow hard about something. I got nothing to add here, except that it wasn't a funny joke, even if Max claims it was something Tommy Heinsohn would say. It would be like me repeating Dennis and Callahan's little routine about Metco gorillas and trying to say that it was okay because I was just imitating them.

I don't know what Ordway is thinking. Yes, there were some anonymous comments, but you certainly weren't anonymous, Adam, and neither was I. Same goes for a whole bunch of us, whatever side of it we came down on.

Bravo to you.

Listening to WEEI they have it exactly right. Maxwell actually compliments the woman referee at the end of the clip. There is no acountability and the Herald writer does not acknowledge that the original poster who complained about the comments actually apologized on here, admitting that he does not have Fox Sports and never heard them himself in context.

Hey Adam Gaffin, you're an F'n moron. If you've ever listened to Tommy Heinsohn, you'd know, he has said stuff just like that. I can't beileve anyone would make a big deal about an obvious joke, and even only the most extreme feminist would find that offensive. I can't believe we even have to have a conversation about this. Max is a good guy, with a sense of humor.. sorry you're one of those low-lifes that are so bitter and miserable you have to make a big deal out of nothing. This is ridiculous!! And so are you, A-Hole!!

I will admit that I didn't know the context, but out of context, the content was offensive. Therefore, it was not obviously a joke.

Why is everyone jumping all over Adam so much when he didn't even write the original post?

Also, you score ever so many points with your creative and original choice of name-calling, except how you can't seem to spell "fucking" and "asshole". What's up with the pseudo-profanity there?

You are part of the problem in the word today. Anytime someone says anything now in the world someone tkaes it the wrong way instead of the intent. Cedric was joking around. Get over it this world is to serious now and noone has a sense of humour. Please get over it my wife laughed at it when she heard it on the radio today and the refferee herself has had nothing to say about it. Your just like all the other cry babies in the world. Get over it.

Dude are you actually serious about saying that about Cedric Maxwell. Do you even listen to the games? Do you even know that it was a joke? Give me a break. How did that comment effect your life? Did it ruin your day, did you have to miss class or call your boss at starbucks and take the day off because you couldn't believe someone could make a joke like that. A good guy like that is going to be crucified by the media as a result and he can't get his reputation back. Get a clue and a life you fucking pussy!!

Adam didn't make the original post, but then, most of the people attacking Adam seem to be long on the name-calling and short on the reading comprehension.

Sigh. Now I have a platonic crush on Adam.

A man telling a woman to "get back in the kitchen" when she does something a man doesn't like in a professional environment is sexist. End of story. Not only is it sexist, it's a stupid fucking argument.

Amy, Who was he arguing with? Or did you not hear the comments. There was no argument. In fact he said she was one of the better refs in the league after his mockery of Tommy Heinsohn. Also, I am very offended by your vulgar language. I do not find it funny. Anyone who agrees with me can be my platonic girlfriend.

You and adam deserve eachother. How about you stop making a big deal out of nothing?? Do you really think Max wants all women in the kitchen, did you even hear how he was imitating Tommy Heinsohn? Can you really be this dumb?

I've been one of the people standing up for Max - or, at least, saying that humor is subjective and folks shouldn't be overreacting - but I'm ashamed if that means I have to be counted among the idiots cruising over here from WEEI, who have no idea who Adam is or anything more substantial to say than "You're a pussy."

Get a life, indeed.

It's not a "stupid fucking argument", there's no argument at all. It was a joke, you need to get over it. I bet if Dane Cook said it, you'd be eating up.

A course of reasoning aimed at demonstrating truth or falsehood: "presented a careful argument for extraterrestrial life."

A fact or statement put forth as proof or evidence; a reason: "The current low mortgage rates are an argument for buying a house now."

A set of statements in which one follows logically as a conclusion from the others.

As in, "Amy disagrees with the argument that [the referee] should get back in the kitchen."

I read Universalhub several times everyday. I have learned so much about Boston on this site and I have lived in the city proper for most of my life.

I read the original post and saw it as a joke. It made me think to last week's post regarding the woman with the heart on her forehead instead of ashes... we need to be aware something we find amusing (even though we know it is offensive) can and probably will be taken out of context.

This announcer was on the radio. Make whatever joke you want on your own time but keep it professional.

Oh well, anyway, reading the posts from the EEI fans will be amusing for the next few hours. We should have a drinking game, take a shot for each time some dummy calls Adam a pussy.

I'm the one who was pissed off at Cedric when I heard the comments. A friend suggested I post it to Universal Hub (no one reads my blog and I like it that way), I created an account and submitted it as a story. Thanks, Adam, for posting it.

I have to admit it was pretty surreal driving home from school today, flipping to WEEI, and hearing Ordway and pals bashing Universal Hub and me. Isn't Schilling pitching today? There's baseball to talk about!

I'm psyched that Max (never liked the "Cornbread" nickname myself) apologized, and I'm glad he's not in any more trouble than that. Like I said on the other thread, I haven't been much of a Celtics fan for years. I do want to add that I've always found Max & Grande to be far more fun to listen to than the TV guys, not that I would pay for FSNE anyway.

Adam, you had me at "bite."

The wild-eyed fear of digital media that's so prevalent in talk and sports radio (those fast-fading forms of creaky old media) never ceases to amuse me.

I will say that this whole incident has produced maybe the most entertaining comments I've ever seen on the Hub. Celtics fans must be purging a lot of collective repressed anger.

up

It was a stupid thing to say, Max apologized, no further trouble, end of story.

But this thread just makes remember why WEEI screens all their callers before putting them on the air.

I'm surprised that the crackhead duo of Dennis and Callahan weren't in full discussion mode over this. It takes the whole lot of fat, ex--athletes who all try to talk at once (doesn't WEEI request their on air "talent" know how to talk on the radio?) to spurn a giant sh#t storm.

Ask the men about this: "That's funny.."
Ask the women about this: "That's terrible.."

Guess it MUST have angered someone.

Radio? What's that?

Sounds like another old media dinosaur fighting to maintain ratings in a dying medium.

This sort of thing is going to get worse before it gets better. Remember when Japan usurped the automobile business?

Radio, television and newspapers are not inherently flawed. They've been mismanaged and gotten greedy and their customers are tiring of the abuse. Apparently, they think it best to continue this pattern, alienating potential listeners by insulting them.

It's not about responsible journalism. It's about the relationship. The time and trust the subscriber gives you, hoping it won't be wasted.

You two should take a long walk off a short pier. Get a sense of humor you PC thugs! Maybe if someone gave you a proper seeing to every now and again you wouldn't be so bitter and miserable and quick to jump on these comments which mean absolutely nothing. Get bent the both of you.

Sexist jokes are okay as long as they done while impersonating someone else? What kind of logic is that? How does that change the context in a meaningful way? Had Heinsohn ever made that remark while broadcasting? If not, how is this an excuse?

Look, Maxwell should apologize. Yeah, I get that it was a "joke". It was a bad joke and in poor taste. An apology is an entirely appropriate response. What's the outrage over? It all has an unmistakably reactionary tone and feels like the usual entitled misognistic bitterness that always seems to crop up whenever someone gets in trouble for saying something stupid.

up
Voting closed 0

Actually I am pretty aware of the meaning of an argument. Fortunately for my well being I am aware of a joke as well. Anyone who listens to the Celtics on a regular basis would get the context just as I would if someone made a joke about me in a certain context. The great part is the original poster admits to never watching the games or having even heard the original comments. If not for his obnoxious post which he apologized for, noone would even be mentioning it as I think we all agree not too many people are listening to the Cs on the radio this year,

What do you mean, "having heard the original comments"? I hadn't heard or read Heinsohn's comments about female refs until after I started looking into it yesterday, but I was offended listening to Max's comments on the air Monday night. I didn't get that Max was making fun of Heinsohn, which Heinsohn does deserve, and that does change my attitude about the whole thing a little bit.

But that doesn't mean I think he was perfectly okay spouting that crap. I kinda sorta apologized for posting with the vitriol I did, but I'm still glad I blogged about it. And Max kinda sorta apologized in a rather strained verb tense tonight, but he still intends to be Max and to be zany without thinking much about it.

This thing turned into a warning shot that the suits in the Sports Broadcasting business won't just let "boys be boys" in the broadcast booth. I don't let my sons buy into the sexism. I don't let my middle school students talk like that either. If I played a small part in spreading an anti-sexism message further, that's a Good Thing, even if many people view me as a humorless PC killjoy.

What's even funnier about this is that someone on the Big Show made the same crack about getting back into the kitchen about Pat Summitt several years ago. It might even have been Glenn Ordway himself who said it. It really sucks for people like Max and Ordway that words just don't disappear into the ether now.

As to the guys insulting Adam, I just hope you have daughters so I can tell them to get back into the kitchen on career day at their schools when they say they want to be a doctor or a lawyer. I'm sure they'll get my Tommy Heinsohn impression.

It was sexist, and shouldn't have been said. Whether he was impersonating someone else or not. He should try doing a Michael Richards impersonation next. That will go over really well.

Adam Gaffin is the owner of this site.

Dave Adams is the person who wrote the post so many of you are objecting to. He is one of many people who write here.

These are two different people, even though they both have "Adam" somewhere in their names.

This is a sports radio station? Hours spent discussing a blog post? Glenn and company are becoming as bad as Dennis and Callahan with their stupid news reading, conservative political crap and everything other than sports. Next, ESPN will put O'Reilly and Coulter on as hosts.

After all these years, why would any sportscaster make such a comment - joke or not? How many sportscasters have to get fired because they make such stupid comments? Listen, if you wouldn't make the joke at a meeting at work, it's probably not a great idea to say it on the air. (Get back in the kitchen? Try that one at work and see how many laughs you get.)

Adam, who do you think read your blog to Ordway?

Sweet God.

Anyway.

I guess Cedric Maxwell apologized, which is good. I understand that it's easy to say something stupid and have it recorded, but come on, dude. Don't they train these commentators not to be idiots? How come Remy and Orsillo never say disparaging things about women on Sox broadcasts? This guy's an idiot. But the Celtics are excited because people may actually tune in to the basketball games now, even if they're only waiting for Maxwell's next sexist/racist/whatever-ist comment.

Also, let me clear some things up. Yes, I fucking swear. Don't worry-- I haven't reproduced, so I'm not kissing any babies or sullying your bacon and eggs with this mouth, Deion.

Secondly, I hate Dane Cook. Not funny. Bill Hicks? He's funny. And he swore *and* had good arguments.

Thirdly, it's not "reacting over nothing." Don't get me wrong-- I'm not over here burning my bra because some guy made a snide remark about women-- but what he said was stupid and he should be called out for it. Women still have to put up with a large amount of bullshit in our professional lives, so when some guy comes along and says you do something wrong because you're a dumb woman, it deserves a reaction. This guy probably thinks Hillary shouldn't be president because she'd detonate the bomb when she has a bad case of PMS. In fact, most of the people calling Adam a pussy probably feel the same.

Lastly, I'm sure Adam and I shall enjoy burning in our liberal PC hell where women aren't insulted simply because they have a vagina, people aren't insulted because they're a color or nationality, and everyone has healthcare.

I'd love to know how Jason Wolfe determines his punishments over at EEI/RKO. John DePetro got fired for calling Grace Ross a "fat lesbian", which although crude, is 100% correct. However, his sports guys at EEI get away with far worse and only need a slap on the wrist. Having listened to Maxwell for many years, I truly don't think there was any ill will on his part. Dennis & Callahan calling Metco students gorillas, on the other hand, was completely in character. They got only a slap on the wrist from Wolfe.

Why is it that the clueless trolls who listen to Pete "the meat" Sheppard (is he still even on the show?), and Glen Ordway can't get it in their tiny, mealy, freedom fry eating heads that this post was not Adam's doing? Now I know why I stopped listening to the "Tiny" Show, it was rotting my brain.

I don't even care about the original issue. Idiots, get your facts straight before you get all Freeper/LGF on everyone and start hurling unwarranted insults. Get back to calling the Big Show and suggesting coaching advice for the Pats and the Sox, you morons.
