Is Starbucks hiring its help at Dunkin' Donuts now?

Maybe that would explain what the uptight yuppie type was doing this morning at my regula Dunk's (Rte. 9 west in Wellesley - but, hey, that's almost Natick): Seeming to get upset when the staff didn't understand why he kept asking what the strongest coffee they had was and they started reciting all the different types of sugary things they offered (because, come on, this is Dunkin' Donuts, buddy) and he said "No, I'm just looking for the strongest coffee you have" and finally one of the workers got the idea and said "espresso" and that seemed to quiet him down.

In any case, Samara reports that she could barely contain her disgust when she ordered a triple venti non-fat, no-whip sugar free caramel macachiato this morning only to find out at work that she'd been given a venti, non-fat, no-whip, extra hot sugar free vanilla latte.

Her order makes no sense.

Why bother getting "sugar free vanilla syrup" in a drink that comes with Caramel Sauce on it (which does contain sugar.)

Also whip cream is not included in the caramel macchiato, so there is no reason to ask for "no-whip"

Instead of attempting to cut calories by ordering non fat milk and sugar free vanilla, just get a tall regular caramel macchiato instead of a venti. Enjoy the drink as it was meant to be and get your morning sugar/caffine high elsewhere.

Ventis make me think I'm going to drown; they're huge. I'm pretty sure I've been asked if I want whip on my macchiato before though (I don't order them often, being more a cinnamon dolce sort of girl).

Bob, I can name that drink in 3 words:
Large Coffee, Black.

When in Rome... if you're at Dunkin' Donuts order a simple coffee and be done with it. If you're at Starbucks though, do feel free to order your tall non-fat half-soy vanilla latte with a triple shot of espresso.

I've been ordering caramel macchiatos for years - never have I asked for whip nor have I been asked if I want whip.

I had to check Samara's blog to realize that she wasn't joking, because at first I was under the impression that she was making light of people placing incredibly complex, and often nonsensical Starbucks orders and then complaining about how they didn't turn out the way they expected.

I thought people who did that and followed it up with a post on the internet about the tragedy it was in the course of the day were sarcasm-fueled cliches, and not real people.

It appears as though I was mistaken.

Well, getting something that tastes bad when you're expecting something that tastes good is always a downer.

I'm concerned that I posted a comment over there though without remembering it, but I'm pretty sure that Molly isn't me...

I never could at times that I REALLY need coffee.

I always order thusly at Starbucks: Large, Dark, Black. That typically gets me whatever the brewed coffee of the day is in the hi-test version, lots of it, and poured within about 5mm of the top of the cup.

However, having a complex menu of wackyjava means being able to deliver on it with a minimum of carmellochinovanilliano misclassification.

I don't know where all the fancy stuff comes from. I thought a "regular" was an abomination when I came from the northwest, where regular coffee once meant black coffee. Starbuquitous has always been venti pretentiatto loonychino.

I agree, it makes no sense. And I even pointed this out to my boyfriend when he explained the drink. All I wanted was what I had Sunday, and I figured in order to replicate that experience, I needed to order the exact same thing...

Besides, what's wrong with a drink little customization?

I disagree with the people saying ordering a sugar free drink that has caramel on the top doesn't make sense. If you guys ever bothered to watch this drink being made you would know they add both regular caramel and caramel syrup. The syrup is of course highly refined and pretty terrible for you. Further, the sugar free stuff tastes just as good. So I don't see a reason to drink even more sugar.

It is a pretty funny and involved drink. I even occasionally laugh at myself when order. In the end, I like the drink and get over how silly I feel.

it's not caramel syrup - it's vanilla syrup. the only differences between a vanilla latte and a caramel macchiato are that a) the latte doesn't have caramel and b) the macchiato features espresso poured in after the steamed milk, hence the "macchiato" - marked foam. so, basically, the only real problem was the extra shot and the caramel sauce, both of which could easily have been added by the barista after the discovery was made. oh yeah, and it was extra hot... i suggest waiting 3 minutes for it to go from 150 to 140 degrees.

it's pretty hilarious when people order complex drinks and don't even know what they're ordering.

Is it possible someone else grabbed your drink before you had a chance?

I worked in a coffee shop for a while, and I was always amazed how some people would grab the first thing I put up, never mind how many people had already ordered, and then they'd get cranky when I pointed out it was someone else's.

Maybe someone wanted that non-anything vanilla crudiccino, but took yours instead.

(I'm biased towards baristas though, so take this for what it's worth. :) )

Now that I think of it... this was a SB location with a drive thru, so it might have been passed off wrong. If that is the case, I have to say whoever really ordered that drink has some extra funky taste...

(ditto to the dude who ordered the quad venti four pump raspberry espresso over ice. A true order witnessed by myself and my boyfriend last summer. yargh.)

I once tried to order a quadruple latte at an independent coffee cart.

They wouldn't let me. I think I looked too fried. They made my triple fine though.

(I was in college and had just pulled an all-nighter. I'm too old for either all-nighters or quads anymore.)
