Rozzie parking smackdown

Rachele Rosi-Kessel calls for parking meters in Roslindale Square and the next thing you know, Boston police are issuing parking tickets like nobody's business. Coincidence? More here.

In any case, an apparent shortage of spaces in the Square has a weird set of causes: Cheapo commuters would rather park in the free municipal lot and walk a block to the station than pay $2 to park in the commuter-rail lot, but at the same time, local lard-butt employees are parking in the street rather than using the lot because they don't want to walk the block or two to work. So the goal is to make the commuters park in their lot, make the workers park in their lot and free up the streets for actual customers.

Speaking of Square annoyances, looks like the city might simply try to take over that abandoned gas station across from Adams Park.

Rachele seems to realize that pricing is key when it comes to parking. Parking meters priced correctly should encourage turnover, providing ample space for people coming to shop. Ideally, 15% of spaces should be vacant at any time. Employees should park in off-street lots that are cheaper to park in for the day than it would be to park at meters, or they should simply not drive to work at all if possible. Everyone wins: Shoppers can park more easily, businesses see more customers, and congestion is reduced since less people are circling for parking spaces. Hopefully, Roslindale can make this happen!
