Yes, a new look
No, of course, I can't leave well enough alone! I wish I could say there were some dramatic, exciting reasons to change the look of the site, but there aren't any.
I wanted to experiment with making Universal Hub a bit more search-engine-worthy, by moving the actual content higher on the page. So I moved the left toolbar over to the right.
But I also wanted a place to highlight stuff on UH for more than 15 minutes, so I also put that blockish thing over at the top right. I'll probably use it to rotate between polls, cool Boston-area photos and continuing coverage of key issues (or Mooninites, my pick).
Let me know what you think and if anything breaks or just sucks.
Thanks!

Aiiiieeeeeee! I don't know
Aiiiieeeeeee!
I don't know if that's positive or not. Not sure of the Courier-esque font. Reminds me of seventh grade. "Wow, it's my computer! Printing like it's a typewriter! It's new school meets old school! I love AOL!"
But I have much love for the T token, and the content on one side of the page.
I grew up with typewriters
Now, let's see how many keys I can hit at once and make the whole site jam up :-).
And maybe, just maybe, next time I do a banner, I'll save it in layers so I can change just the font without having to recreate the entire thing.
Looks good
though, on my screen, there's a blank, light gray column to the left of the actual content, and another such column on the right.
The T token is cool, but even cooler would be a rotating banner -- the T token some days, the CITGO sign other days, etc.
Firefox is not showing me the favicon. I'm not sure why.
that's the page background
I don't think those are columns on the right...I think that's the background of the page.
I like it, Adam!
Unliquid design
Yes, LaDivina is right - that's the background for folks looking at the site on largeish monitors.
One of the things I wanted to do was make the content area a bit wider so I could post larger photos (my stats show most visitors now have 1024-pixel wide screens or better). But I also didn't want to just let the content area expand to fit the entire screen, because, if for no other reason, at work, I now have a large-screen monitor (well, 19 inches) and I didn't want to get a headache following loooong lines of text across the screen. And never mind that I love saying "liquid tables" and could say it all day long, in groups of three (read Zippy much? Me?).
Them winders is adjustamabobble!
You do realize that you can make the browser window any width you want, right? Why would you make any window (except for maybe InDesign or Photoshop) take up most of the screen width?
http://1smootshort.blogspot.com
Because ...
Some of us grumpy Windows users who grew up with tiny little screens never got out of the habit of having all our windows take up the entire width of the screen.
hray!
Welcome to UnivsrlHb 2.0 beta!
(just joshin. I enjoy all the sidebars over to the right now.)
Making the page search-engine friendly
If one is CSS-happy, it's possible to put the content first in the HTML and still have a sidebar on the left. Most MT blogs work that way.
CSS
There is a Drupal "theme" that does just that. But it's very, very green (green buttons, green text, green everywhere) and I am lazy and didn't want to go through and change all that. Maybe one of these days, since, of course, the Holy Grail of Web design is completely tableless design.
amen!
*choir of angels singing*
(completely tableless when appropriate, that is) :)
Recent Posts?
Why no more "recent posts" from all of us? (Unless it's not showing up right now on Firefox..) It has provided me with a lot of great clicks to my blog and I have met many new Boston bloggers by doing random clicks on the links.
Sin of omission
It's back, thanks for letting me know.
Muchas Gracias!
Thanks Adam.
I do like the new look too. Quicker/easier navigation and looks like it'll give you more space for longer posts about our posts. Nice posts!
Nice but...
Could you add a filter so we could filter out the commenters who insist on bashing each other at every turn? Look how silly the squirrel post has gotten.
Ha ha, consider this comment
Ha ha, consider this comment seconded!
A filter will only work if
A filter will only work if everyone is required to have an account and be logged into it when posting.
For example, if said filter existed currently, you could filter me as long as I'm logged in to this account, but I couldn't filter you, since you aren't logged in. I could easily get around this by posting as Mollynotloggedin (which is occasionally necessitated by cookie issues) or by just choosing a different temporary alias.
It *could* work
If people wouldn't bash each other at every turn :)
Oh, it's really more like
Oh, it's really more like every other turn, don't you think?
Anyway, if that were the case, we wouldn't need the filter in the first place, which is probably your whole point. :)
nice, clean look. good job!
nice, clean look. good job!
Yup. I like it too.
Having the column in the Right side, as opposed to the left side, took a bit of getting used to, but I'm OK.
I have to agree
I'm just really psyched that I won't have to scroll past all your menus when I'm reading UH on my Sidekick. Go Right Nav!
p.s. You have some stray code at the bottom of the page. something from urchintracker?

Thanks
I suppose if I'm going to put some JavaScript at the bottom of the page, I should include the ending </script> tag.
Pretty
Sweet layout. I'm especially digging on the photo box.
I'm also a little allergic to Courier... I do like the black background, although a lighter color might make the Google ad banner blend a little better. Just a thought.
When are you debuting the orange Cingular wallpaper?
Is there supposed to be a large black rectangle
at the bottom right of the page?
Nope
Could I impose and ask if you could do a screen capture? I'm not seeing it; sometimes a capture can help me figure out what's going on.
Anti-Aliasing
The font in the header needs some anti-aliasing, it's all zig-zaggy.
I've got to agree its kind of sucky as a font choice. There are better typewriter fonts out there. I 'm quite fond of American Typewriter.
OK, tonight, will anti-alias
And, yes, this time I'll save the image in layers so I can swap in a new font without redoing the entire image.
