A couple of Boston city councillors have proposed the idea as a way of reducing problems from unregulated "house parties," often run for a profit, in their neighborhoods. Globe article.

ANY bar that's more than X feet from the nearest residence should be allowed to stay open until 4 am. Deciding on the value of X will be tricky, but I think this is the best criterion to use.

Do we want to keep our creative class in Boston? This is one way to do it.

Sounds good to me. Bars closing early is one of my pet peeves about this city.
