Mattapan man gets life for killing teen outside a Roslindale baby shower

Superior Court Judge Janet L. Sanders today sentenced David Nicanor Diaz Perez to life in prison without the possibility of parole for fatally shooting Quirico Romero Jr., 19, on March 23, 2003, outside the Amvets hall on Belgrade Avenue.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office:

Witnesses told jurors that Perez pulled a chrome .380-caliber semiautomatic during an altercation outside the hall, which erupted after the baby shower had wound down for the night. Romero was running away from the shooting toward a friend's car when he was struck in the back by one of the rounds.

The Roslindale Transcript reports:

The AMVETS hall in Roslindale will continue to operate with restrictions on its license after the group lost an appeal last week before the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.

The AMVETS, a fraternal organization of veterans at 119 Belgrade Ave., had its alcohol license restricted in March by the Boston Licensing Commission following a public hearing in which residents testified that hall rentals were unbearably disruptive to their neighborhood. Complaints include concerns about trash, noise, underage drinking and fights.
