Raise rush-hour tolls on the Pike

Outraged thoughts

The Outraged Liberal puts it well - Why should only Pike drivers be hit up and not drivers from the South Shore and New Hampshire who actually benefit directly from the Big Dig?

Lest we forget...

Pike drivers benefit from the Big Dig too. They now can actually get to the airport. Still, I agree the price tag should have been shared more equitably.

Lest we forget also...

The Pike was paid off in 1983, but the hackocracy figured out a way to perpetuate itself by floating new bonds.

Ooh, I covered that

By adamg | Wed, 06/20/2007 - 8:04pm

They floated the bonds to add a lane on each side from Natick to Weston.

Guess what they didn't do? And guess what money they didn't give back?

Raise polls ?

Is the traffic so slow at rush-hour that you can actually send pollsters around to each car?

The ability to type is a terrible thing to lose.

... of your ability to work a somewhat obscure Star Trek reference into the toll poll :-)

Raise Poles on the Tike?

Spare the rod, spoil the child!

p.s. I agree that the South Shore should pay more of its share - North Shore commuters have the Tobin Bridge or the Airport Tunnels to contend with.

What about

By bostran1 | Wed, 06/20/2007 - 3:53pm

What about those of use who work in low-paying public interest jobs and commute out of the city (and can't take public transportation unless we have a 2 hour commute each way) for work? A $4 trip each way every day would practically prevent me from keeping my job!

Commuter Taxes

By SwirlyGrrl (not verified) | Wed, 06/20/2007 - 5:50pm

Out-of-city commuters in some parts of the country pay commuter taxes - an income tax to subsidize transit and roadway projects.

The more you make, the more you pay.

Those roads cost money you know - pavement is vastly more subsidized than public transit in this country and in this area. Note how public transit projects were promised in writing as part of the Big Dig, yet axed due to the money running out. That's why the CLF went to court. You have to pay one way or another for your travel. The question is how to make it fair to those who cannot afford to live near the city.

Very true, SwirlyGrrl.

The people residing on the South Shore who commute to and from the city, to my knowledge, don't have any tolls to contend with during their commutes, so let them contribute something.
