Downtown Crossing store held up at shotgunpoint; terrier terrorizes Hyde Park boy

Boston Police report that Bel Tempo, 107 Summer St., was held up yesterday around 6:15 p.m. by a man carrying a shotgun in a bag.

At 111 Williams Ave. in Hyde Park this morning, a game of catch between a boy and a dog ended when the boy tried to take the ball from the dog's mouth and the dog took offense and bit him in the face. The boy was taken to Children's Hospital for treatment.

"The suspect displayed a barrel of a shotgun, which was protruding from a bag."

You can buy shotgun barrels on eBay for not that much money. Of course, that's ll it takes to terrorize a city full of docile, gun-fearing victims.

Hell, he could have had a 2-ft. piece of black iron pipe from Home Depot. It's not like most people in a state of shock and panic could tell the difference.

Who cares what it is. If improper identification of a fake = lost money and improper identification of a real gun = death, then the logical conclusion is to minimize risk.

I grew up with guns in the house and I've even helped to build one. Shit, I even own one! I can't say I'd take the chance anyway, particularly since felons are known to pack more than one "weapon".

I don't see what your twisted knickerness is over this anyway - yah, massholes don't know guns from pipe bombs but this is not a simple matter of knowing guns when you see them. It is a simple matter of a material loss versus loss of life.

Are you planning to work for CVS anytime soon? Sounds like they need a few brave replacements for fallen employees with your kind of attitude.

Please...like many people are really inclined to find out the true nature of the gun barrel displayed during a robbery because they are "docile" and somehow unwilling to stand up for themselves because they are weak.

If you're working some retail job and someone shows up with what might be a gun the first instinct is "Shit! I want to live!", not some white knight fantasy of overpowering the robber.

If someone's already drawn down on you, and you suspect the weapon is real, then yes, you should comply with the assailant's demands.

Up to a certain point.

But, if you have the means to defend yourself and the opportunity to do so prevents itself (i.e. his attention is diverted elsewhere and you have time to draw a weapon and take a clear shot), I see no reason to comply any further.

It should be a matter of personal choice, but totalitarian regimes like the Menino administration have taken the right to choose away from the people.

Of course, in Massachusetts, businesses are easily robbed by individuals bearing knives, syringes, metal pipes, bats, etc.

You don't need to a Marine Corps sniper to effectively defend yourself with a firearm. You just need to live in a state that respects your right to defend yourself. Massachusetts is not such a state.
