Hot enough for ya?
Marty reports on the scene outside the JP Licks in Coolidge Corner last night:
... The line was so long that it stretched the full length of the store, out the door, and down Harvard Ave. past the entrance to the Coolidge Corner Clubhouse. That's a long line. But I was determined, so I got in line and worked my way to the front. Long story short, though it took me nearly a half hour to get my small cup of nonfat Chocolate Chip Cookie soft-serve — with rainbow sprinkles, of course — it was worth it. ...
Beantown Bloggery reminds us that Frog Pond opens for wading on June 29. At 11 a.m., to be exact:
... The opening will kick off with a beach party celebration with "refreshments, entertainment, artists workshops, and storytellers from ReadBoston. If Friday ends up being as hot as it was yesterday, I can't think of anything better than getting a lemonade from one of the stands in the Common, rolling up my pants and wading through Frog Pond and then spending the remainder of the afternoon working on my tan. ...
Evan: collapses:
... I came home from work this afternoon, by way of my local Shaw's for some grocery shopping, and promptly stripped off my shirt and pants and passed out on my bedroom floor, A/C blasting over my skin, for an hour or so. ...
Jolie reports she's sleeping at mom and dad's since they have A/C and she doesn't - which also means a cook-out:
... I'm so thrilled that my friends will get to eat one of my meals at a proper table, rather than buffet style in my living room. Really, I'm such a simple girl at heart.
The plan is to have cocktails outside, set one of the boys in front of the grill, then head indoors to dine with the AC blasting. ...
Karl: Hello, mother nature? I live up north for a reason. Work with me here!
... i got off the train this afternoon, and my car thermometer read 113 when i got in the car. and it still read 102 when i got home. i felt like i was in bikram yoga all over again. ...
AnnaB: I'm in the office at 7AM because my entire neighborhood had a power failure:
So, rather than have a sweaty fitful remaining sleep where I will miss my alarm, I figured I would come into the cool glory of my office. ...
Will is doing a lot of work in the basement.
EnuhCork reports one apparent heat casualty:
There is usually a Metro hawker who shouts goofy things like "Get your Metro because I am dropping it like it's hot!" at the Malden Center T stop but he was out today. His replacement was less dynamic.

It's not surprising
that J. P. Licks Ice Cream was so jammed. I generally tend to avoid the ice cream parlors on super hot days like this for two reasons: A) Because the ice-cream parlors usually are jammed, and (B) the ice cream quickly melts and becomes a mess. Hot days like this, imo, are the worst days to get ice-cream.
In particulate
This isn't just a hot day, or a hot and humid day, it is a hot, humid, and polluted day!
Check out www.airbeat.org for up-to-date user friendly Boston specific information.
Notice the absence of tall buildings downtown? That is because the fine particle levels are very high today - currently rocking around 55 microgram/m3. This puts us into the "unhealthy" category of the air quality index (AQI of 130).
High short-term particulate levels are associated with heart attacks and strokes - and some respiratory issues, too, but those tend to have more to do with ozone levels (still okay but climbing).
Take it easy! Stay inside or go shopping for a loooonng time. Give your heart and lungs a break.
p.s. the fountain at the Charlestown Navy Yard is open for splashing and cooling off.
Sprinkles?
Do you think he meant jimmies? :-)
