Ride a bike all around Boston

Cool for bicyclists; motorists might want to consider alternate routes for Sept 23.
Paul Levy points us to Hub on Wheels, a one-day bicycle festival aimed at supporting digital education in Boston public schools. How festive? Imagine Storrow Drive completely closed to car traffic:
You'll ride over scenic pathways, colorful side streets and main roadways - including a car-free Storrow Drive! You can choose from a 25 or 45-mile loop. Either way, it's a great opportunity to see the city and meet people from all over Boston.
Hmm, now there's an idea: Close Storrow permanently (that tunnel's falling apart, anyway), then have people park in Brighton and rent them bikes for the commute to and from downtown.

Park in Brighton? Hahaha. If you can find a spot to park in Brighton! I suppose you could use all those new self-storage places though...
sounds like fun
as both a motorist and cyclist, this sounds like a lot of fun. i'd never try something like this on my own, but at least with other cyclists around i'd be encouraged to bike new places.

My 9 year old is STILL talking about how he got to ride on Storrow Drive on his own bike.
We did the 20 mile ride as a family - me on my Bike Friday, #2 Son on his own ride, and #1 Son and Dad on Carless Santandem.
how long did it take?
i'm not in the best shape but i bike most days of the week -- i'm thinking of registering for the 40 miles but not sure if that's too much. were 20 miles easy enough to do?
About 3-3.5 hours overall (20 mile)
We took our time since #2 son was on his own 24" 21-speed bike and was 8 years old. We let him set the pace and call the breaks.
The start was slow due to all the bikes heading out at once, but that ensured a proper warm up. Storrow Drive was a blast, as we got a good "two wheels good - four wheels baaaad" chant going (think Animal Farm here). It was kind of chilly and sprinkled off and on, and the wind by the waterfront in Southie was wicked. Undaunted, he still cranked it out at 8-10 mph and learned to draft the much bigger bodies in the impromptu pod we were travelling with.
With rest stops and traffic it was well under 3 1/2 hours total time.

I did Hub on Wheels last year
A great event, which I highly recommend. I did the long (40-mile) route last year. I just hope it doesn't rain on me at the end of the ride this year!

What were you all thinking when you (briefly) announced that the event would now be called "Bike to Bridge Boston"? Was it supposed to go over the Zakim Bridge?
This year, after biking down
This year, after biking down the car-free Storrow drive you can then pedal through the Arnold Arboretum, Franklin Park, West Roxbury, the Emerald Necklace, Jamaica Pond and beyond. There are 25 or 45 mile rides, so anyone can participate!
