Dorchester Big Brother charged with sexually assaulting boy

HorganBryan Horgan, 41, was ordered held in lieu of $100,000 cash bail yesterday at his arraignment on several charges related to the incident, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office says (Update: bail reduced to $20,000 at a bail review hearing today). Horgan allegedly knew the boy, 13, through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay.

... Evidence suggests that Horgan brought the boy to Horgan's Adams Street residence, where he tried to serve the boy alcohol. The boy refused.

Horgan also allegedly tried to show the victim pornography and sexually assaulted him. The boy resisted and [Horgan] subsequently drove him back home. During that ride, prosecutors believe, an intoxicated Horgan told the boy not to say anything about what had transpired. ...

Only he immediately told his mother, who contacted police. Prosecutors say they are looking for other youths who may have had similar contacts with Horgan.

At his arraignment, Horgan pleaded innocent to charges of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, assault with intent to rape a child under 16, and dissemination of matter harmful to minors.

Look at the photo!!!! Not only is this guy an alleged perv...but at the age of 41 he looks at least 60.

I guess being an alleged perv makes you age faster.

I have to wonder if this guy will be found to have taken another's identity. Two reasons: one, his stated age does not match the mugshot and, two, big brother big sister does background checks.

I have a hard time believing that this guy is 41. I also have a hard time believing this is his first attempt to assault a minor.

At least from the limited information here, he seems to fit the profile of a really impulsive guy (maybe has a head injury?), rather than a more, well, skilled offender. People who get away with more offending don't generally do blatent creepy stuff like offering kids alcohol and trying to watch porn with them. You know, they're the super-nice coaches and scout leaders and whatnot that everyone trusted, and they're usually really charismatic and they earn the families' trust through being really caring. These offenders usually slowly and gradually cross the line with kids and otherwise don't do anything else illegal or questionable.

So yeah, it would seem that this guy probably gets caught easily if he's trying to show kids porn. It also seems that he'd be more antisocial and likely to do stuff like steal someone's identity, if he's impsulsive like that. This of course is all just speculating based on the news stories I've seen, but yeah, I'm willing to entertain the idea that he's an identity stealer!

One has to ask why in hell guys like this are still at large and are even allowed near children in the first place.

One has to remember that, in the American criminal-justice system, one is still presumed innocent until proven guilty.

the guy should be given a fair, speedy trial and, if he's presumed guilty of the crimes that he's on trial for, he should be punished as needed--and the punishment should fit the crime(s).

No, if he's FOUND guilty, not if he's PRESUMED guilty. Jeez.

"if he's FOUND guilty, not if he's PRESUMED guilty. "

I stand corrected on this one.

The Herald doesn't mention that it lauded Horgan for his Big Brother work (possibly with the same kid) last year (if you want to see the beginning of the story, search "Horgan" in the Herald archives, then click to the second page of results).

The Globe, meanwhile, talks to Horgan's lawyer, who says he's innocent and that the accusations come from a young man with problems.

I feel really bad for the dude if he in fact didn't do anything. I hope everyone is really throughly evaluated.

I worked with a kid who was in her mid teens and at that point acknowledged that she'd been making false accusations since she was a pre-teen. She'd gotten staff fired and their lives ruined at two elite private schools, then two residential schools where she was sent. Some of the people she accused were "just" fired, and others were convicted of stuff.

The kid had plenty of her own problems, and you can't really blame someone of that age and in her situation for coping in this way, but just...guhhhhh. I actually don't know what ended up happening in terms of whether someone contacted the courts and let them know that she'd admitted making up all these things. I hope they did, for everyone's sake.

i happen to know bryan (alleged offender) and yes, he is 41. it's just a bad mugshot. no, there's no identity theft here. (clever..y'all should be on matlock). i guess being f*#'ed up and arrested might make you look a little older. i'm not sure if he did it or not but one thing holds up in the story -- he has serious problems with alcohol. this doesn't excuse if he did in fact perpetrate the boy, but when sober as he is periodically, bryan is a very nice guy, upright citizen, and not in a creepy predatorial "nice" way, either. he is a friendly guy, very good sense of humor, caring about the people around him, and he has struggled for many years with his addiction. i know he looks creepy in the mugshot (i totally agree, almost couldn't believe it was him at first)... but please consider the person you're judging here (before he even gets a trial), is a human being. if you knew him you might call him a friend. my sense is, if it did happen, it was probably a very bad lapse of judgment under the influence of a whole lot of booze ... he is not the kind of person who would set up some elaborate scheme to molest a kid (i don't think he has the wits or energy for that). he's the kind of guy who has a good heart and genuinely would want to volunteer with big brother (or other organizations that help people out... not just kids). if the allegations are true, it's one of those cases of someone getting way too wasted and doing things in a blackout they normally would never do.

As someone else who knows Bryan I just want to say "Here, here. Very well said". I can't add to your comments or say them any better!
