Dairy Joy, Weston

MY WIFE and I enjoy the cheeseburgers from this stand that also sells ice cream, frappes, fried clams and scallops, hot dogs, fries, etc.

While this is our 'go to' when we don't feel like experimenting, I'm interested in hearing your choices. Thanks!

Sunset Grill & Tap/Cantina

Cheap + Delicious, plus good fries, plus access to many beers, plus convenient for me = my fave!

Very good, but sit down and

Very good, but sit down and not too fast.

A few burger options

Fancy, expensive -- Craigie on Main, at the bar only
Fancy, mid-priced -- Toro, order it messy
Modest, pub style -- Audubon Circle (and its cousins: Miracle of Science, Tory Row)
Fast food -- Flat Patties

Honorable mentions: The Gallows, The Druid, The Bristol, Harvest, Lee's Place Burgers (Newton Centre), Union Bar & Grill.

Mine's on this list

Flat Patties. Mmmmmm.

I've also only been to O'Sullivan's once, but I'm looking forward to going back.

O'Sullivan's on Beacon Street

O'Sullivan's on Beacon Street in Somerville: good for burger, beer, and the game.

i'll agree with that!

for a sit down burger, i love r. f. o'sullivans in somerville. it's often noisy and boisterous and if you're sitting near the kitchens it can be smokey. but the burgers are crazy tasty! just be warned that a lot of food is cooked more pink than you might expect, so it you don't like something bloody, go for well-done. if you do like bloody -- OMGSOGOOD!

respectfully disagree

all of my friends love this place, and I just don't get it. The burgers themselves are pretty good, but the bun and cheese and other toppings just don't have any flavor whatsoever.

Ashmont Grill has an AMAZING

Ashmont Grill has an AMAZING burger when you want to be waited on and eat something quality (grass fed beef, locally sourced produce, etc...). If you haven't been yet, don't miss your chance to enjoy the heck out of their patio during the good weather - it's amazing.

UBurger is awesome for fast food - and is my go-to for pre-Fenway dinner/lunch.

B Good is my go-to for "I want something fast, but that isn't trash". And sweet potato fries? YES PLEASE.

Head to Somerville

I'm really enjoying Boston Burger Company in Davis Square. Many delicious options!

Zaftig's has pretty good

Zaftig's has pretty good burgers, but their chili is better.

R.F. O'Sullivans

R.F. O'Sullivans on Beacon Street in Somerville has bloody brilliant burgers. Maybe not the best in Boston, but the best for less than $10!
http://www.rf-osullivan.com/

They do a burger that's big (think the depth of Bartley's but a lot wider), beefy, tasty, takes 1/2 an hour to prepare, and big huge fries (or chips). These burgers are filling, and the 1st time ye go I recommend holding off on the starters as you might end up over stuffing yourself.

For the fries or chips as these things are huge, it looks like they take a huge Idaho potato, cut it in 1/8's and deep fry it. And, they serve beer. See the pic of one of the Burgers & Chips someone posted on Yelp:
http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/GcQ9rr2SQh1xk3AJHDiRxA?select=nLySZBn4J85I16s47Ugc_g

The place is on the small side, and there's almost always a wait (for a reason). At busy times you might have to wait outside, so plan ahead.

Ditto That

A RF O'Sullivanburger did in my teenager - his not finishing a burger and rings is no mean feat!

I also like Christopher's in Porter and that little hole-in-the-wall place in Davis across from the T portal on Holland.

UBurger is a good place for a not-too-heavy lunch.

Best Burger

Go to Tony's Market in Roslindale Square, ask Tony to grind some hamburger meat for you. He will give you a perfectly textured, ridiculously fresh, ready for burgers grind. Go to your backyard, form beef into 3/4 inch low density patties, liberally salted and peppered. Grill over hot coals 3 minutes on each side. Add cheese of choice during last minute for side two, serve on lightly toasted bulkie rolls. Burger assembly should follow this order, bottom to top: bun, thousand island dressing, lettuce, tomato, meat, cheese, dill pickle chips, ketchup, bun.

Much of this can be tweaked according to taste, but if you want the best burger, the fundamental issue is the quality of the meat, and Tony is the guy to buy from.

Shortcut

And if you don't feel up to grilling it yourself, go to Geoffrey's, next door to Tony's, where the burger is made from Tony's ground beef heel.

Wild Willy's in Watertown...

... which is almost as good as Bartley's :)

I Thought Wild Willy's Closed?

We went months ago and enjoyed it, very much. I was under the impression they had closed. Huh. Guess I'll have to clean off my glasses next time I drive by.

Big juicy burgers; good chili, too. And, now that I think of it, some pretty good root beer!

Nope...

... it's walking distance from here, and we met there for a family birthday lunch this spring (the only nearby place where we could feed all the kids -- 5 nephews, 1 daughter, 1 godless-son). The last time I had takeout from there was about 3 weeks ago. And maybe tonight. Heh.

linky

Hey!

Someone's been cheatin'! There are twelve "rational opinions", but only three comments!

Fess up folks!

(I went with all burgers. Yes, yes, not to picky about burgers.)

Maybe it's because I don't

Maybe it's because I don't treat myself to one very often, but the best burger for me will always be a Quarter Pounder with Cheese from McDonalds... Heaven.

There's A Place For That, Certainly

Every so often, I get a craving for something from Ronald's place.

But what I'm looking for here is what you'd go out of your way for, someplace worth driving (or taking the T) to. As much as a double cheeseburger from Burger King might hit the spot on occasion (more occasions than I should rationally admit to, I'm afraid) I'm talking your juicy, pinkish-in-the-middle, mine-might-look-slightly-different-from-yours-because-of-individual-attention burger.

Screw you, hippie!

Burgers are deliciious, and nutritious! If God didn't want us to eat burgers, why did he make them out of meat? Take your junk science and go find yourself a folk festival!

Oh wait, sorry, had the vegetarian crowd not weighed in yet? Whoops. My bad.

As a matter of fact

I spent last weekend at a folk festival...at which I ate a perfectly decent cheeseburger, and an even better smoked sausage sandwich, not to mention the pride of Albany's junk food meccas, salt potatoes. (Basically tiny new potatoes boiled in brine and served swimming in butter. Hellaciously tasty.)

Closer to home, here's what you need to know:

1. Flat, wide burger patties are better than lightly squashed softballs of meat.

2. You can put as many toppings on a burger as you want, but if the meat is no damn good, then the burger isn't gonna be any good. (see rule no. 4)

3. Flat Patties (see rule no. 1) is the closest you can get to a decent burger in Boston. Uburger is in second place, although their fries are better than FPs and they have frappes, which FPs doesn't.

4. Bartley's fucking sucks. Someone should have firebombed it years ago due to the crimes against burgerdom committed there, although the place is such a pathetic little grease pit that the resulting devastation would make the MOVE bombing in Philly look like a wastebasket fire.

Bartley's

Bartley's is the best burger I've had, and I've had lots...

Agree! (and yes!)

I've done my research. Mysteriously to me (because they are fried) Bartley's wins! It's about the meat, I guess ... Go there!

I love Four Burgers in

I love Four Burgers in Central Square, partly because it's really close to my house. The regular burger is local, grass-fed, always cooked perfectly, and not super expensive. I've also never had a crappy tomato from there, which is nice. Fat, juicy, tasty tomatoes and good lettuce on the burgers! I also really love the salmon burger there, which has cole slaw on top.

Also, their fries are out of this world.

I may be the wrong one to ask...

As a vegetarian, I care more about ambience than burger quality, though my wife & kids like 'em, so that's fine with me. With that in mind, off the top of my head:

• Dairy Joy in Weston. No veggie burger on the menu, but the paninis aren't bad, and the ice cream is great -- plus there's usually at least one or two wealthy Weston people with a fancy old in the parking lot.

• Sullivan's, Castle Island, South Boston. I forget if they have a veggie burger, but the fries are good, plus (again) ice cream, and it's on the harborfront next to Fort Independence. Good playground for the kids, too.

• Mr Bartley's, Harvard Square. More options than you can shake a stick at, including yes veggie ones. Also, it's a block or so from a JP Licks for dessert.

• Burger King. It's not that they're that good, but unlike McDonald's or other fast food chains, they have a veggie burger on the menu, and it's actually decent.

• Johnny Rockets. Veggie burger, check. Ambience like an outtake from "Back to the Future", check. Awesome shopping mall setting, check. Wait. Well, two out of three ain't bad, anyway.

On the South Shore

If you're ever on the way to the Cape and craving a good burger, get off at exit 12 on Route 3 and stop at Pasta Eleganza in Pembroke. The Bacon Gorgonzola burger is AMAZING... hand packed black angus, wonderful Gorgonzola, and BACON!!!

U-Burger

I'm not a huge fan of the giant hard-to-eat burgers. U-Burger serves a good moderately sized patty that won't have you feeling like your heart is about to explode afterwards.

I haven't tried In-And-Out yet, but the pictures look promising.

I've been to the Kenmore

I've been to the Kenmore Square UBurger a few times, and enjoyed it. I'm waiting for the new one near Park St Station (supposedly it's opening by the end of August). It's close to where I work; I'll have to be careful about not going there TOO much, lol.

Doyle's Braddock Burger

I don't eat burgers often but when I do that is the only one I'll get. so good... I usually only get one after a serious workout.

Black and Blue Burger at the Dogwood...

I'm getting one tonight!

Oh yeah, that is quite good

Oh yeah, that is quite good indeed! Now I want one!

Lewisburger

@ Lewis' in Norwood Center.
Burger with egg salad, ham, onion, lettuce, tomato & onion.

Buh-gah's!!

1. Bartley's My dad took me there. I take my kid there. The best around.
2. Five Guys Randolph, Swampscott, all over. The East Coast version of In and Out. Great beef and great fries!
3. Wild Willy's Try the grass fed burger, an extra buck fifty, but well worth it!

Christopher's!

They have awesome veggie burgers, and two different kinds. With awesome toppings to choose from. And no burger is complete without a lot of liquor, which they also have.

Five Guys

I like Five Guys. For me at least, it is a destination burger joint.

Homemade from grass fed beef

I love burgers. It was a close call not to vote for "all burgers are excellent".

But ever since I started buying local grass fed beef (first from River Rock Farm, who deliver, and then from our CSA share from Chestnut Farm) I don't bother ordering burgers, since the ones I make at home are sooooo much better.

Lest you think I'm a complete goof, I do eat a Burger King burger from time to time (McDs has better fries) and enjoy the Five Guys experience. But the burgers I look forward to are a home cooked meal.

the breakdown

Bartleys
overrated. their burgers are usually over-dry because they are so damn rotund, so in order to cook the middle at all, the rest gets overdone. toppings are decent quality. menus is very entertaining. and their sweet potato fries and frappes are amazing.. but the burgers are underwhelming.

RF O'Sullivans
also overrated. their burgers are better than Bartley's but still suffer from being a bit over-dry, because of their "round burger" technique. Their toppings just suck. Their different burger options all taste like grease because their cheese is such low quality. and those potato wedges that they call fries are not fries.

UBurger
my favorite fast food option. delicious flat-patty styled, which for me is much better than the spherical burgers discussed above. pretty greasy, but pretty good. awesome, delicately battered onion rings.

Wild Willy's
way over in watertown, you'll find a burger similar in construction to UBurger but with amazing ingredients. the beef is grass fed, the cheese is high quality, and their fries and onion rings are perfect.

My favorite?
Charleys
this is pretty much the only reasonable place to eat on Newbury Street, and they happen to have the best burgers in town, in my experience. I think the key is high quality toppings & bun with great flavor (unlike O'Sullivans) the burgers aren't flat patties, but they're cooked properly unlike Bartleys or O'Sullivans - when you ask for medium, you get medium instead of well-done. they lack the grease of Wild Willy's which allows their quality ingredients to shine, unlike WW's that tend to be overwhelmed with grease.

okay, I'm done wanking here. now I just want a hamburger.

Thanks Everybody!

MY WIFE and I will enjoy celebrating our independence this weekend by scarfing burgers at a few of these places.
