MBTA Transit Police report a man trying to hold up the Dunkin' Donuts at 99 Cambridge St. in Charlestown yesterday had his plans foiled by a T cop in search of a cup of coffee.
According to police, Michael Wallace, 35, entered the store around 5:30 p.m. and took out a long silvery object:
He then pointed it at a female employee working behind the counter and in a threatening manner demanded all the money in the cash register. The frightened female employee slammed the cash register drawer closed and backed away from Wallace in an attempt to create distance from him. Wallace, not deterred, leaned over the counter and began pushing buttons on the register in an effort to force it ajar.
Unfortunately for Wallace, Officer Matthew Donovan entered the shop about the same time, saw what was happening and immediately arrested Wallace.
The long object turned out to be a large spoon, police say, adding the worker thought it was a knife because Wallace "held it by the rounded end and presented the long skinny pointed handle in a threatening manner."
Wallace was charged with attempted armed robbery and assault by means of a dangerous weapon, police say, adding they are also investigating the provenance of two women's bracelets and four necklaces they found on Wallace.
