Worked for them out of college while looking for a post college job years back, and it was a great experience. Probably got me in the best shape I've ever been in.
They pride themselves on literally running around the competition and getting their jobs done quicker and to their customers satisfaction. I remember moving a person INTO an apartment before the previous tenet and their movers had them out, after showing up 5 hours late and bring kids on S break to do the moving. Got a big tip and the embarrassed lady moving out took our card "for next time".
Their quotes are usually slightly more then the bigger places, but as long as you're 100% honest of whats going and what jobs you want, they typically run under their quote because of that quickness. (Some people are really bad at adding on extra's like basements full of junk after the quote for just the living spaces, or deciding day of they want you to pack; a moving no-no if you expect to come in at or below quote)
Frank and Richard run a pretty good business.
And be sure to tip, wages are ok but not for busting you butt up 3 flights of stairs with cherry wood bedroom sets, and trying to get the job done under quote for you. If you are impressed with a moving service, tips are very much welcomed if not expected for a job well done. If it's a small apartment/move, a cheap subshop lunch is plenty, and anything under 90 min work don't bother.
Just used DN Van lines yesterday and with great success. They were one-third the price of Gentle Giant! The staff was friendly and that was even on a day when it rained the entire time.
Moved with them a week ago. I got a quote from Gentle Giant too and thier prices were outrageous. People in the office were great and so were the men that showed up.
I used GG to store my stuff for a month between moving out of my apartment and closing on my condo; agreed they haul ass, and everything came back to me from storage just as I left it, not one thing broken or damaged. Well worth the price -- especially trying to move in and around Boston, they've done it a million times and can handle pretty much anything...
are hands down, the best moving company in the metro Boston area. I have personal experience with them, and know TONS of people they have moved. I can only say good things, and have never heard otherwise. From what I can tell, they run a really solid operation.
Good movers with a price that reflects it, but is fair.
They actually train together(cross training).
And the company is really great to their employees.
I once had a bad encounter with a driver of theirs who was driving aggressively and dangerously on the Pike - I was a passenger, so I contacted the company by phone and they took care of it immediately (like, contacted the truck and made them pull off and switch drivers).
They really do care what people think of their company.
Gold Star Trucking of Cambridge -- about 2/3 the price of Gentle Giant. In business for many, many years, still family owned and run. Very professional, flexible about timing, easy to work with. Have used them for 3 moves.
I had Death Wish come out and move some kitchen appliances into a second floor remodel for me, and those guys were terrific. Extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and I spent about half of what I was expecting. I would use them again for any move.
I think it's interesting that not one comment has been about how X moving company was bad. For some reason MA has excellent moving companies compared to other parts of the country. I have used maybe 3 companies for moves within Boston and they have all been very good.
I just had a fan-friggin-tastic experience with Safe Responsible Movers. I set everything up via email last week and they arrived promptly this morning and had me moved out of my apt in Waltham and into my new place in the Fens in 2 hours for $270, which was 2 guys and a box truck for the minimum 2 hours + a $90 flat travel fee. They even let me ride in the truck when my ride fell through. Can't recommend them highly enough.
I've used Aviv Moving and Storage in Brighton twice on the advice of a friend who had used them and they were fantastic both times and prices were very reasonable. They employ hard working kids who are really professional and careful with your stuff and don't want you to have to lift a finger. I tipped them well.

Agree w/ Marathon Movers
I agree w/ the tweet recommending Marathon Movers. I've used them a couple times. They are pricey, but very punctual, friendly and efficient.

Movers
I've used Gentle Giant with great success. They are kinda pricey per hour, but they are all athletes and haul ass. Quickest moves ever.

Eye candy bonus!
They pick things up and put them down.

Hiring the professional movers
Hiring a professional storage and relocation company helps organizing the big moves in a smooth and error-free manner.
