I'd second Tropical's in Dudley. It looks pretty decent too, but I haven't actually tried it.

One of the best little butcher shops in the city for chicken and goat. Halal too.

I second Haymarket area - Puritan Beef Co. 90 Blackstone St. My Jamaican coworker buys her goat there. I've tried a sample of her cooking and it's delish.

There are 3 Haymarket vendors with goat. They have the widest choice, but tend to higher prices (worth it, says I) Save A Lot, America's Food Basket always has it. Price Rite often does. The latter two tend to the very bony cuts; in fairness though goat meat tends to be bony and Caribbean folk enjoy sucking on the bone.

If you are nice to the Blackstone Street halal guys, they can sell you meatier cuts, at a premium. The bony standard is fine for goat stews. Those are our family favorite.

Expect to pay $6 or more per pound.

Oh, and at Food Basket, there's often a $3 or $4 a pound "mutton." In reality, that is a fattier goat in the packages there, but perfectly good for for stews and slow stir fries. It requires some skimming but is very flavorful.

If you're from the Caribbean, you mean goat meat when you say "mutton." If you're from Western Europe you mean sheep meat.

Goat rarely is fatty. If you see significant fat on it, and it's labelled Mutton: it's sheep meat.

However, he will cut it up for you (ribs, chops, ground, etc) and it freezes really well. He'll even throw in the head if you were making Birria. Damn, now I'm hungry.

I often see meat in the grocery store labeled "Cut Up Goat", yet I never see "Cut Up Cow" or "Cut Up Chicken".

Is there something particular about "cut up" goat that doesn't apply to other animals? Otherwise, I it just makes me think of a goat that's good at telling jokes.

I saw somebody walking out of Mayflower Poultry on Cambridge St in Cambridge carrying an entire skinned goat, so I'd imagine you can get it there!
