Upkeep on an older Volkswagen

Ashley Keenan asks:

Any suggestions on a reasonable and reliable mechanic to do some upkeep on an older VW? Preferably near JP.

I second the vote for West Cork Auto. Patrick is the man.

They've been doing good work on my 2000 Cabrio for years.

Spent more time in his garage than mine. They were great, they would let my bring in parts from a donor car I had at home.

I don't know if they are still as good as they once were, but they knew their way around an '86 GTI and '87 Fox.

They are on Broadway in Cambridge, closer to Kendall than Harvard.

I take my VW to Mecca Motors in Allston (Penniman St). they're a Saab specialist, but they recently bought out the VW shop they shared space with (Woodings Garage), where I've got for years. They're very reasonably priced, honest and do good work. Highly recommended.

Metric Systems in Cambridge is also very good - I used to use them for most work, but they can be hard to get an appointment with because they're pretty popular. Also, they became rather expensive so I stopped going there several years ao.

I've been going to Wooding's since the 70s. So sad that it was sold, but I've been impressed with Mecca and they kept on one of Wooding's long-time mechanics.

I've been taking my Saabs to Chuck at Mecca Motors for 20 years now. You won't find a more trusted, honest, skilled mechanic .

Never heard a complaint in decades. They are nice, too.

We took our car to Morrison's for years until they tried to charge us $1300 for brake work. A mechanically inclined friend was sitting next to me when they gave me the quote and he spit out his coffee. On his advice, I called around and had the repairs done for $1000 less elsewhere. Turns out they had misstated the need for, um, almost everything.

In talking to another JP friend who used to use them, he'd had an even worse experience. They lied to him about the need to replace a part to the tune of over $1000. He went for a second opinion and was told that said part did not even exist on his car.

Have a third friend with a similar story of egregiously overpriced work. Unfortunately, behind their cheery welcome and 5 star yelp reviews, they appear to be scam artists of the first degree.

...I don't believe they work on German cars.

I wouldn't let you all in on this secret if I didn't buy a new car recently because this is a one man shop. Wentworth Service Station at 50 Stedman Street in Jamaica Plain charges nearly half what others do. Great place to bring an old car.

not in JP, but I would add Foreign Auto Center in Central Square to the list. Nick is a great guy to work with and the prices have always been very reasonable. They've been my mechanic of choice for my 16 yr old Jetta for the last 4 years. They specialize in VW and other german cars.

I worked with Metric Systems 10 years ago and found them to be very expensive. The owner also yelled at me (like red in the face angry) when I questioned the price he suggested for new tires. I simply asked if there was a lower priced option, the car was getting older and didn't need performance tires. I ended up going to GoodYear and paid half of the price.

All of these comments are making me itch for another used VW. After having a ...
- 77 Rabbit
- 81 Rabbit Diesel
- 90 Fox
- 87 Audi 5000 Quattro
- 95 Jetta
- 01 New Beetle
... One would think I'm a glutton for punishment! Le sigh...

My husband had a '79 Diesel Rabbit. I had a '78 diesel rabbit. He replaced his with an '86 GTI, and I replaced mine with an '87 or '88 Fox.

Then we had a series of wagons and minivans ...

Last year, after I had rented Jettas a couple of times and the 10 year old minivan was not doing so well and we rarely used the space, my husband and I brought home a new TDI sportwagen with a standard transmission. It was like a form of homecoming.

Fahrvergnügen is forever!
