The city didn't just decide to put up random plastic stanchions in the square for the heck of it. Walk Up Roslindale explains how the stick things and new markings are an attempt to "calm" traffic, to make drivers go slower, to make the roads safer for pedestrians and bicyclists - and the drivers themselves.

New bus/bike lane in Roslindale

Sometime overnight, a city crew painted the town red - or at least the morning bus/bike lane from Roslindale Square to Forest Hills - as BNF shows us.

The lane, in effect since June, requires people to move their cars before the morning rush hour so that commuters on all the buses that funnel down Washington Street from Roslindale, West Roxbury and Mattapan, along with bicyclists, can get a faster ride to the T stop.

A lizard in Roslindale
Lizard

OK, OK, it was more of a loungin' lizard, soaking up the sun outside the Citizens Bank on South Street in Roslindale Square.

Adam Kessel, who found the wee beastie this morning, took it home and put it in a comfy box for safe keeping until the owner shows up.

Freed from the constraints of "donuts," the chain can now offer all sorts of things - like bags of ice. Robert Orthman spotted the sign offering ice this evening outside the still Dunkin' Donuts on Washington Street (the one near Roslindale Square, not the other one).

Kids at the Build Zone with balls in Roslindale

For the second year, members of Roslindale Wants to Play set up a "Build Zone" in Roslindale Square, this time in the old trolley substation at Washington Street and Cummins Highway.

Unshoveled sidewalk in Roslindale Square

For years, the city of Boston and the MBTA have disagreed on who's responsible for the stretch of sidewalk and bus stop along Belgrade Avenue below the Roslindale Village commuter-rail parking lot. So, of course, nobody ever shovels it, at least until Roslindale residents call up and annoy City Hall enough that a councilor or somebody gets Public Works to send somebody down with a shovel (calls to the MBTA are, of course, useless, since nothing annoys the T). Looks like City Hall hasn't gotten enough phone calls over the past couple of days.
