A former Boston cop got a year's probation and a $2,000 fine after admitting he lied to FBI agents investigating whether he had given information about an ongoing investigation of the the Academy Homes Street gang in Roxbury to a member of the gang.

Mel Steele, 36, was a member of the BPD's Youth Violence Task Force - its gang unit - who was also a longtime friend of a member of the gang. The US Attorney's office in Boston says:

The Boston Licensing Board today rejected a request by one Blue Hill Avenue liquor store to sell nips and approved the sale of another store near that one on the condition its new owners not sell the tiny bottles, either.

Residents and the owners of a Blue Hill Avenue liquor store duked it out this morning over the store's request to start selling nips, at a hearing before the Boston Licensing Board.

The board decides tomorrow whether to let Blue Hill Liquors, 108 Blue Hill Ave., sell the tiny bottles.

The store's attorney, Ethan Schaff, said the store needs the nips to stay in business. He said that when the current owners took over the store two years ago, they agreed to a ban on nips to show the neighborhood they could clean the place up and run a respectable business.

Steven Rolley, 32, of Dorchester, pleaded guilty today to manslaughter for the death of Justin Albert on Tremont Street in Roxbury early on Sept. 14, 2011, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

A Suffolk Superior Court judge sentenced Rolley to 14 to 16 years in state prison, the DA's office says:

Blue Hill Liquors, 108 Blue Hill Ave., goes before the Boston Licensing Board next week seeking permission to sell nips.

The store currently has a license provision prohibiting it from selling the single-serving mini bottles of alcohol.

The board generally imposes nip bans on liquor stores at the request of local residents and police.

The board's hearings begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in its eighth-floor hearing room in City Hall.

A Suffolk Superior Court jury today convicted Jamel Bannister, 24, of Dorchester, on a charge of second-degree murder for the death of Courtney Jackson at the Dudley bus station on Feb. 28, 2013, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

A second man, Brian Cooper, 27, of Mattapan, pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree murder earlier this month for the death.

According to the DA's office, Bannister and Cooper got into an argument with Jackson around 9:30 p.m.:

Boston Police report the arrest of three 19-year-olds on Columbus Avenue early this morning after finding them driving around with loaded guns - one with laser sights.

Boston Police report arresting a Roxbury man armed with a loaded gun after "a violent struggle" yesterday afternoon.

Police say gang-unit officers patrolling the H-Block area of Roxbury due to recent gun violence spotted a guy "acting suspiciously" outside 30 Harold St. around 3:10 p.m. and went over to talk to him:

A Dorchester man accused of shooting up a schoolyard as kids played in a playground next door on Sunday was ordered held in jail at his arraignment yesterday, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Prosecutors had asked for $100,000 bail for Semaj Leary. Judge Debra DelVecchio set bail at $10,000, but agreed with prosecutors to revoke his bail for an open assault-and-battery charge - for which he is scheduled for trial in June.

Boston Police and the Suffolk County District Attorney's office today released this video showing Boston Officer John Moynihan being shot in the face point blank during a traffic stop in Roxbury on March 27. His shooter, Angelo West, was fatally shot.

Police Commissioner William Evans said today that Moynihan continues to recover.
