Crowded Davis Square Red Line stop

The scene at Davis. Photo by H.

Around 7:50 a.m., a Red Line train ascended in Elijah's whirlwind at Alewife. That was about an hour after train 804 from Providence breathed it last, leaving commuters just hanging around Mansfield until the 806 could get to them, as Joe shows:

Shortly after 8:15 p.m., Union Square went dark, the victim, Nstar says, of "damage to high voltage equipment." It proved an inconvenience to many, but a lucky few found it kind of nice, as Spatch reports:

Power outage in Union Square; the block with Bronwyn was affected. Anniversary dinner in growing darkness is very romantic.

Don't Look Down, Beantown ambles about Assembly Row, the new mixed-use development going up in Somerville, likes the way it's coming together:

From materials to patterns, the faces of each building stand out from one another. Planned downtowns like this often run the danger of blending into a forgettable vanilla (nothing planned all at once could meet the eclectic nature of, say, Government Center here in Boston or the French Quarter in New Orleans), but Assembly Row avoids just such a pitfall. It has personality. Particularly the Legal Sea Foods.

Debris in Somerville

Roving UHub photographer Nick reports:

there was what I can only assume was more than a simple fender bender a week ago on the Arlington/Somerville line at the intersection of Route 16 and Broadway. The debris from the accident is all on the Somerville side of the street: parts of a quarter panel, side mirrors, lots of glass. One enterprising young (five-year-old?) kid was jumping up and down on it as I drove past yesterday. Safety first though: he was wearing a helmet.

This morning, before the parade, the city DPW went along the route cutting bikes away from bike stands and pole, to pile them into a truck for removal.

Tiffany Montogomery, herself a veteran, found her car towed - and when she complained, a cop threatened to arrest her. And then, when she got to the tow lot, they wouldn't give her her car without a "release ticket" from police, which meant a trip to the police station - after taking a cab there in the first place.

She reports:

Didn't this also happen yesterday?
Yes, yes it did.

State officials today announced a 2-mile "community path" from Lechmere to Lowell Street, alongside the Green Line extension, will be fully complete by the time the Green Line extension opens, whenever that is (the latest estimate is 2020).

Construction is already well underway on the segment between Cedar and Lowell streets; state officials say that part of the path should be ready for use this fall.

The final cost of the walking and bicycle path is set at $39 million, half of which will be paid for with federal funds.
