Graffiti at Thompson Center

Larry Johnson spent some time recently at the Thompson Center, which some residents want to turn into a multi-use dog park, but which state Rep. Angelo Scaccia is fighting to keep it just the way it is.

Artists have complete freedom of expression here in billboard size pieces and are not fettered by the limitations put upon them by "community standards" or neighborhood associations who govern what can be put on public walls, or commercial concerns, or "acceptable" material teenagers can create on a mural project under adult supervision. This outdoor gallery is a unique museum of these creations, ever changing and challenging convention.

For the second time in six months, vandals have defaced a mural at the corner of Archdale and Washington Street that depicts a Dominican saying. Unlike in June, today's defacement appears to be the work of two different taggers.

After the first incident, members of the Mayor's Mural Crew repainted the mural about two weeks later. The mural crew, however, consists of high-school students who only work in the summer.

Shire is a Lexington company that got permission earlier this year to sell a drug that allegedly helps people with chronic dry eye disease. You know, like Restasis. But unlike the company that makes that, Shire's decided a good way to advertise their product is to fill the sidewalks of Boston with chalk ads overnight. The city reports it's sending out parks-department crews to deal with the dry chalk issue - by washing the crap off.

Shire's headquarters is conveniently located off the intersections of 128 and 2, should anybody wish to do a little impromptu chalking. We're sure they'd love it.

Not art in Chinese

Chris Devers spotted this graffiti on a building in East Somerville and wondered what it meant.

Our own Kaz reports it says "Not Art." Really.

A mural showing Charles River rowers on a wall in Lincoln Street that recently went up has already been defaced by some jerk who's doing his part to "keep Allston shitty." Universal Hub users who think that not posting photos of such defacement is equivalent to lynchings can see the damage. Maybe some volunteers can do for this mural what the Mayor's Mural Crew recently did for a defaced mural in Roslindale.

Keep Allston shitty: New graffiti thanking state for clearing away old graffiti

Not long after we reported on the graffiti battle on the Franklin Street footbridge, the state got rid of the graffiti (no doubt just a coincidence). As Rose shows us, that didn't last long.

Bradley photographically preserved a copy of a note posted to the Franklin Street footbridge over the turnpike and train tracks in Allston. Turlach MacDonagh shows us some of the more literate of the graffiti.

A sage citizen complains about the dolt who spread out a message across much of the length of a long wall on Winthrop Street in Roxbury, that message being "I'M NOT AN IDIOT," to which the citizen replies:

The rest of us don't share that sentiment.
