Back in the day, kids had to learn how to hide under their desks when the A-bombs fell. Things sure are better these days - the odds of a Soviet ICBM barrage are kind of low. But as Boston University Police remind us, we need to be prepared for mass murderers.

Boston University has bought three on-campus streets from the city for $11.45 million. Their plan is to turn the roads into a "pedestrian mall" for now, although the university master plan uses some of the space to redevelop and expand science laboratory buildings along the roads.

Signs went up along the roads recently announcing the removal of all public parking on July 30th, which includes over 100 meters and unmetered space for about a dozen handicap-designated vehicles. The information on the signs informed people to call the University's Transportation Department, whose website also contains further information.

Only they didn't seem to be much reassured. The Daily Free Press reports on the latest meeting on BU's biolab, which wants to bring in the world's deadliest pathogens for study.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's office said today it has filed a nolle prosqui document in the case of Max Nicastro, a defenseman on the Boston University hockey team, who was arrested in February.

After a three-month investigation and a comprehensive review of the evidence it developed, prosecutors determined that they could not meet their burden at trial of proof beyond a reasonable doubt and had an ethical obligation not to pursue it further.

The Quad takes a look at Boston University's original plans for the land it bought along the Charles River in the 1920s - centered on a skyscraper in honor of local inventor Alexander Graham Bell. Today, if you know where to look at the School of Theology, you can see an echo of the plan - a metal engraving above a doorway of what the tower would have looked like.

A BU student has had enough with the headlines (such as this one) about her school:

If every undergraduate student posts his or her favorite memory of BU to their Facebook, Twitter or blog, there would be more than 18,000 positive examples of BU online to counteract the few negative ones. I can't name all of the best things about BU in this letter, so I'm going to need your help.

Channel 5 reports the apparent pledges at a non-sanctioned BU frat at 24 Ashford St. were also coated in flour when police found them in the basement early today and that frat members could face criminal charges.

On the B line, that starts somewhere between Copley and Hynes, Five Thousand Words a Day reports:

The change is far from gradual, yet you never notice it until you look up and see that the quite nuclear family from Rhode Island has been replaced by a conspicuous gaggle of 12-15 bros who have taken pre gaming to a new level.

UPDATE: The Daily Free Press posted its apology this evening.

The Daily Free Press at BU plans some sort of apology tomorrow for its April Fool's issue, which featured stories with leads such as:

The move comes on the heels of the second arrest in three months of a BU hockey player for alleged sexual assaults, most recently on a rape charge. In a letter to students, BU President Robert Brown writes:

The charges in these cases understandably lead to questions about whether the hockey team's culture and climate have contributed in some way to the actions of the two individuals. The University must address these questions and, if deficiencies are identified, make necessary changes.

The Daily Free Press gives us a taste of life in some of Allston's lowlier student apartments, of the sort that gives one reason to describe Allston as a student ghetto. Illustrated with a photo you probably don't want to look at while eating lunch.

UPDATE: Charged dropped for lack of evidence.

NicastroBU Today reports Max Nicastro, a defenseman on the men's hockey team, was arrested early today by campus police. The Daily Free Press reports the incident happened in a dorm room.

Nicastro was ordered held in lieu of $25,000 bail and was immediately suspended from the team.

In December, another player was charged with forcing his way into a female student's room and groping her.

Innocent, etc.
