State Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz wants to extend a referendum provision of the proposed state gambling bill from the area immediately around a casino to an entire municipality. The Dorchester Reporter explains why everybody in Boston should have a say in whether Suffolk Downs becomes a casino.

The Jamaica Plain Gazette reports the JP Neighborhood Council has formed a five-member bargaining committee to try to wrangle a "community benefits agreement" out of Whole Foods. The move comes after council members talked to local groups and politicians about the impending store - but not Chang-Diaz, who refused to talk to them. You may recall it was Chang-Diaz who first proposed Whole Foods help start an affordable-housing fund or stay out of JP.

At a meeting last month, the council noted that Stop & Shop signed one of these agreements as a condition of moving onto city-owned land off Centre Street. Whole Foods has a lease to move into the vacant Hi-Lo property.

The Jamaica Plain Gazette posts a copy of a letter from state Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz to the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council's Whole Foods Ad Hoc Committee, in which she says the benefits of 100 decent paying jobs and better access to healthy food are outweighed by displacement of poor people by the well to do:

We stand to lose many of these families, and their friends and neighbors, if property taxes and rents balloon so fast that their incomes can’t keep up. In order to preserve the character of JP that we all love and believe in so deeply, development has to happen at a pace our neighbors can benefit from, not be displaced by.

Mike Ball reports he visited Dianne Wilkerson's campaign headquarters today - and found a couple of wistful "diehards" still handing out stickers - and then took a trip to Sonia Chang-Diaz's headquarters, where he found the candidate herself doing some desk work:

And will city councilors Charles Yancey, Sam Yoon, Stephen Murphy, and John Connolly do likewise? You may recall they made a point of not endorsing anybody in the 2nd Suffolk state-senate race after their horse lost by a nose in September. Now that said horse has made them look like, at best, tools, you think they might make the best of a bad situation and endorse their fellow Democrat?
