That's an electrical fire above the platform at the Beverly commuter-rail station around 6:40 this morning, as photographed by Joe Pitha, who alerted the T via a tweet reading, simply, "This can't be good."

GateHouse newspapers vs. YouTube
By adamg - 7/15/08 - 9:38 pmGateHouse had been using YouTube to post news videos, but now the video service that lets teenagers post videos of themselves stomping on other teenagers has decided to pull Wicked Local's video of the Beverly Gloucester-sucks floats, not because of the eight-foot long spurting penis, but because one person in the video complained to YouTube. Of course, you realize, this means war:
If YouTube is unwilling be a true media partner, then, at least for GateHouse, we will need to seek alternative means of distribution of our videos.
Of course, that assumes there will still be a GateHouse to fight YouTube.
Class warfare north of Boston
By adamg - 7/8/08 - 9:59 amSeth Gitell considers the Beverly July Fourth parade and its Gloucester haterade and says it's just the latest proof that we're becoming a region divided by class:
... One of the unique aspects of Eastern Massachusetts, unlike much of the country which is defined by brand new, nondescript, "subdivisions," is that the region still has cities and towns with unique identities. Also unlike other regions, such as the Southwest (Anglo v. Latino,) South (white v. African-American,) where divisions are primarily ethnic and racial, you're still dealing with towns, which have similar racial and ethnic profiles. Our area, therefore, provides a good litmus test on class. And it's ugly. ...
Snow joke
By adamg - 1/14/08 - 6:22 pmKirk Williamson's video, above, shows his commute this morning from Cape Ann to Beverly. Not the most exciting thing in the world once you realize he's figured out how to drive down 128 in the snow while holding a camera and so won't be sliding off the road - until the last 15 seconds or so, when you will see something that will make you burst out laughing because it is just so ludicrously absurd.
