Paul Nutting provides a last glimpse of the Government Center T stop before it shuts tomorrow for two years of renovation work that will transform the1960s bomb shelter into a sleek glass paean to modern transportation - but one without popcorn.

Demo wall at Government Center

But, sadly, the "demo wall" at Government Center is just an instruction to the workers who will begin tearing apart the station on March 22, rather than a place to see demonstrations of various things.

The morning commute, like around 6:40, started with an inbound Red Line train kicked the bucket at Savin Hill and a Green Line train meeting its maker at Government Center - an occurrence that the T suggested to riders might be a good time to try out the Orange Line between Back Bay and North station.

As of 7:30 a.m., the T said things were back to normal.

Joe Gravellese reports Planet Fitness has sold its Government Center outlet to some company called Rock'n Fitness.

Still open, same membership price, same hours, etc. ... They've already scraped off most of the logos etc. It looks weird in there.

And one of those things they scraped off was the large "No Judgement Zone" banner, which was forever getting judged, hard, by aficionados of English spelling.

Red Sox Parade Stops At Boston Marathon Finish Line To Honor Bombing Victims (11-2-2013)

Giant Sox heads on the Longfellow Bridge

On the Longfellow Bridge.

What a great day for a parade.

From Fenway Park to the banks of the Charles, Bostonians lined up early for a chance to see the 2013 World Champion Boston Red Sox - and doesn't that sound good to hear?

When the procession of Duck Boats got to the Boston Marathon finish line in Copley Square, it stopped. Jonny Gomes put the World Series trophy and a Boston 617 Strong jersey on the finish line. Then the players and fans listened and joined in a chorus of "God Bless America."

Glenn Cabo shows more of the scene:

City Hall under construction

The Boston City Archives have posted a collection of photos related to the creation of Government Center in the mid-1960s, including some of the demolition of buildings in old Scollay Square. As you can see above, the JFK building went up faster than City Hall. Below, look at how you used to be able to drive right up to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market:

NorthEndWaterfront.com reports that Aaron Michlewitz, who represents the increasingly student filled North End and Beacon Hill, says the BRA needs to consider requiring dorms in the proposed garage re-do.

Perhaps Rep. Michlewitz is too young to remember when Beacon Hill residents managed to squash Suffolk's plans to turn the old MDC building across from the State House into a dormitory.

The Salem News reports on the jury award for Samantha Mattei, injured in a May, 2009 collision blamed on trolley driver Aiden Quinn texting his girlfriend while operating the train.

The T argued that Mattei had some of her conditions, which her family says forced her to drop out of college and will require home care, before the crash.

New neighborhood downtown

A developer yesterday filed plans with the BRA to replace most of the Government Center garage over 10 years with a series of buildings housing 771 apartments, a hotel and 1.3 million square feet of office space. The plans, by Bulfinch Congress Holdings, which has owned the garage since 2007, also call for "a new public square and pedestrian promenade that will connect both the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway and the Market District along Congress Street through to Canal Street."

Matthew provides notes from last evening's meeting on the need for a new Government Center T stop and how officials are planning to move people around when they lose the connection between the Blue and Green lines for two years.

The Globe reports on the planned September, 2013 shutdown, which will include making the station ADA compliant and replacing the current bomb shelter of an entrance with something glassier.

Meanwhile, on Dec. 18, the Parks and Recreation Department holds a formal tree hearing on the T's request to chop down 21 trees along Cambridge Street to make way for the renovation project - 13 linden trees and 8 crabapple trees. The hearing starts at 10 a.m. in the department's 1010 Mass. Ave. offices.

Episcopalians from across Massachusetts plan an unusual protest tomorrow downtown: A march that will end with Communion - and the destruction of participants' Bank of America cards:

During the service, Bank of America credit and debit cards will be collected in the offertory plate and destroyed, and a special prayer will be said over those who pledge to bank locally and close their accounts with Bank of America and other large banks.
