A passerby noticed a body on the Esplanade bicycle path around 5:30 a.m., the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will attempt to determine the cause and manner of his death, but the preliminary investigation did not reveal signs of violent trauma and the circumstances do not suggest robbery.

A goose in Boston's Public Garden

Winged menace gives you the eye.

Boston city councilors will take a gander at a gaggle of ideas to deal with geese and the crap they leave behind.

At a hearing today, councilors heard suggestions that included fining people who feed them, having parks workers and volunteers coat goose eggs with oil, which kills the chicks but fools the mother goose so she doesn't lay more eggs - and buying more umbrellas for city parks workers with which to find off angry geese when they try to grab the eggs to coat them in oil. The Globe today posted a photo from 1955 by Boston-based photographer Ted Polumbaum showing guys jumping into the Charles River - from the far side of the then "modernized" Storrow Drive, which had become part of the river.

UPDATE: State Police report the man, from Allston, was pulled out of the water around 8 a.m. and rushed to Mt. Auburn Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

State Police report crews are searching the Charles River near the Weeks Footbridge for a man witnesses say jumped into the river shortly before 7 a.m. and then did not surface.
