Channel 4 reports on the federal charges against John Analetto, who allegedly threatened to kill his bookmaking partner, which turned out to be a mistake since the guy was actually an FBI informant.

He is the third state trooper to be arrested in less than two months. Last month, a trooper was arrested in Lynn on charges of paying for sex and driving away from police; in November, a State Police captain was arrested in Saugus on charges he failed to stop for police; he now also faces an OUI charge in the case.

A State Police captain will likely be suspended today over a Saturday incident in which he allegedly refused to stop for Saugus Police investigating an activated residential burglar alarm, State Police say, adding he may have been drunk at the time.

Thomas McCarthy, 47, had his cruiser and gun seized pending a hearing today on his duty status, State Police say in a statement. McCarthy was commander of Troop C, which covers central Massachusetts.

The Globe reports the push comes after Monday's Carson Beach incident:

“They're perfectly suited to do a lot of important jobs in policing," [Commissioner Ed] Davis said of State Police. "They’re not as well suited to doing community policing in the neighborhoods in Boston."

However, Davis doesn't want authority over the Esplanade, also under state control. And the VFW and West Roxbury parkways weren't even mentioned in the article, even though they are lined with houses - and Davis cited domestic disputes along Day Boulevard that BPD gets called on but then can't do anything about as one reason to seek legislative approval for the shift.

Pitiful treatment of disabled at Esplanade fireworks

Yesterday my daughter and I decided to brave the crowds and head to the Esplanade from Newton. Before we left I checked the July 4th web site put up by the city, and specifically looked for information about handicapped parking and seating. On the site they indicated that there would be parking spaces for the handicapped with placards on Storrow Drive as well as a parking lot at Mass Eye and Ear with shuttle buses.

State trooper indicted on drug charges

Edward McCormack, 38, of West Roxbury, will be arraigned this morning in Suffolk Superior Court on charges he managed to obtain potent painkillers from a number of different pharmacies to feed his own addiction, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office:

McCormack was indicted Jan. 7, but had been suspended without pay since last April. State Police spokesman David Procopio said this morning that internal investigators began looking into allegations that McCormack obtained the drugs through "doctor shopping." Procopio declined to comment further on the case against McCormack, but added:

We are disappointed and saddened by Edward McCormack’s alleged behavior. Anyone suspected of breaking the law, whether a private citizen or police officer, will be investigated and, if the evidence warrants, prosecuted. The overwhelming majority of Massachusetts State Troopers conduct themselves with honor and integrity. In those rare instances when a department member does not do so, we investigate immediately and take appropriate action. Our responsibility to the citizens we serve demands nothing less.

Procopio added that McCormack had not actually worked as a trooper since April 12, 2005, when he was granted medical and personal leave. He became a trooper in 2002.

My day in court

So, I had my magistrate hearing for my scooter problem from back in September. I posted the details and result of today's hearing in response to the original post, but I wasn't sure how many people would see it using the "Most recent posts" as opposed to the story list and I know that many were interested to hear how it all turned out.

The moral of my entire story: The State Police have no idea what the moped law states and you should just accept whatever an officer tells you when he says it without question because the system will fail you in the end if you rely on it to treat you fairly.

I'm in a bit of a quandary. MGL 90-1b states in part that all moped drivers:

...shall be subject to the traffic laws and regulations of the commonwealth and the regulations contained in this section, except that: (1) the motorized bicycle operator may keep to the right when passing a motor vehicle which is moving in the travel lane of the way...

Found innocent on charges he smacked a guy with a bottle in a fight last year at the Greatest Bar. Two former BC players, both now in the NFL, had been put on probation for the incident.

Where Boston Police are powerless

Channel 4 reports that whenever Massport takes over property, Boston Police lose their police powers. Might make sense for Logan, but the authority controls growing chunks of South Boston waterfront as well:

This issue is causing tension between Boston police and State police. For example, on the sidewalk in front of the New Seaport Hotel, Boston Police have no police powers. Because the hotel is owned by Massport, it is the exclusive jurisdiction of the State police.

Of course, the issue is hardly a new one for those of us who live on or near parkways, where there's a similar phenomenon (get into an accident on the VFW Parkway in West Roxbury, and you have to wait for State Police to show up).
