Twice in three days, men pulled off Blue Line tracks

A man wound up on the tracks at Airport station around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. The train operator managed to stop the train before hitting him. An MBTA spokesman declined to say how the man ended up on the tracks but said he was not seriously hurt (click to see a photo from the scene, forwarded by Heath - it's not gory, but could be disturbing).

Around 1 p.m. today, Jenn Martinelli reports:

A guy just fell on the tracks at Maverick Station right before the train arrived. 3 people jumped right down to help. The train was almost at the station and they just jumped right down and got him.

Blue Line shut when woman winds up under train at Maverick

Blue Line service was shut around 10:15 a.m. to let Boston firefighters remove a woman from under a train. A T spokesman said the woman was alive when extricated, adds, "She did not fall. She was not pushed."

Police: Muggers preying on people walking the streets of Maverick Square late at night

Boston Police report five street holdups in the Maverick area between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. since last Thursday.

In all of the cases, victims were approached by two or more men, who then relieved them of their cash and, if they have them, cell phones. In two cases, the robbers wore black and white bandanas; also in two cases, the robbers displayed handguns.

The most recent holdup was at 10:49 p.m. on Monday at Orleans Street. Two white, bandana-clad males, demanded the victim hand over her phone. The day before, at 1:20 a.m. at Gove and Paris streets, a man was ordered to hand over his phone by three black males.

Police: Man breaks into East Boston residence overnight and gropes women

Boston Police report they are looking for a guy who broke into a residence at Murray Court and Orleans Street early Monday morning.

Police say two women were asleep around 4:45 a.m.:

The residents were awoken by a suspect who was standing in their bed room. The suspect indecently touched both female victims who awoke and the suspect fled out a window. The victims were able to give a limited description of a white non Hispanic or a light skinned Hispanic male, 30 to 40 years of age, possibly light facial hair, medium height, wearing dark clothing, possibly sweatpants. The suspect fled in an unknown direction.

Five-alarm fire tears through East Boston building

Firefighters rushed to 269 Sumner St., a three-story residential and commercial building at the corner with Orleans Street - just 50 yards from a firehouse. Firefighters were ordered off the roof.

The Fire Department reports 21 residents were displaced. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Stabbing at East Boston Burger King

AlertNewEngland reports somebody was stabbed around 6:30 p.m. at the Maverick Square Burger King and that the suspect, a Hispanic teen, fled into the Maverick T stop.

The Globe reports the teen is expected to survive, as is the dog a police officer shot this afternoon in Maverick Square.

Man hit, killed by Blue Line train at Maverick

MBTA Transit Police report a man who "suddenly entered" the tracks at Maverick shortly before service ended early this morning died. Police say he was white, 47.

Gas leak forces evacuation of Maverick Square elderly housing building

The Boston Fire Department reports the Heritage Elderly Housing building, 30 S. Bremen St., was evacuated this afternoon after a worker dislodged the building's gas meter, causing a gas leak that spread inside the building.

Nobody was injured; MBTA buses were brought in for residents while National Grid repaired the leak.

Pink-loving woman sought for East Boston bank holdup

The FBI's Bank Robbery Task Force has released a couple of photos of the woman they say held up the Sovereign Bank branch in Maverick Square last Wednesday.

She's described as 5'3" with brown hair, about 110 lbs. and in her 20s. She was wearing baggy pants and a hoodie that said "PINK" on the back.

Police stop machete-wielding thug before he can finish carving man up

Boston Police report officers on patrol in East Boston around 9 last night spotted a man chasing another man around Maverick Square with a machete. Before they could intervene, the attacker swung at his victim several times, opening him up in the arm and thigh. One officer used his belt as a tourniquet to help stop the victim's blood loss.

Josue Pineda, 22, of East Boston, now faces several charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault with intent to murder.

Also last night, police responded to a shooting at 35 Harmon St. in Mattapan; the victim was taken to Boston Medical Center and is expected to live.

Mike Hillwig survives a trip with a cell-phone-chatting driver on the 120 bus who got enraged by a minivan that cut him off:

... It was pretty obvious that the driver was not happy, angrily honking the bus' horn at the driver of the minivan. As we continued down the street, the bus tailgated the minivan, continuing to honk at the driver. The worst part was when we reached the stop light before Central Square. The driver kept pumping the brakes in order to lurch up closer to the minivan, WHILE HE WAS STILL ON HIS CELL PHONE! Passengers on the bus were physically being shaken during this maneuver. ...

Maverick Square reconstruction begins

Lewis Forman documents a two-year effort to reshape the square and its T stop, which began today. He's betting it'll be done by 2010.
