Weird: Boston owns 200 acres of parkland in Burlington and Woburn

Back in 1930, somebody gave Boston 200 acres of land in the two suburbs on the condition the city maintain it forever as "a public pleasure ground."

Only now Boston seems to want to sell off the land either as a subdivision or a golf course, according to Friends of the Cummings Park, which notes the city took $141,000 out of the park trust fund last year to pay a subdivision surveyor and $13,000 for legal fees this year - while spending absolutely nothing to maintain the land as a park.

Patrick O'Reilly: Mayor Menino, Please don't sell our park!

Wu-wu-wu-Woburn

Who knew there used to be downhill skiing in Woburn? Well, long-time Woburn-area residents, obviously. John Keyes photographs one of the last ski-lift foundations atop Horn Pond Mountain:

... When I was in second grade, I skied here -- going up on the rope tow (or T-bar -- I don't remember which), but the last run of the day we went up the chair lift. Unfortunately, the only trails down from the chairlift were too advanced for my ability, and I broke my leg. ...

Maybe someday people will be recalling the days they could ski down the Great Blue Hill.

It's no longer time to Stop & Shop, at least for him

Brian Kane reports he was too grossed out by the produce department at the Woburn Stop & Shop to ever go back:

... Containers of strawberries with visible mold. Rotten and rapidly decaying tomatoes and onions. Withered and spoiled green beans. This store is literally selling garbage and calling it "fresh produce". ...
