Grand jury ups charges against man accused of running down scooter driver in Roxbury

A Roslindale man arrested on charges he fatally struck a scooter driver at Roxbury Crossing and then drove away last November was indicted last week on new charges that could put him in prison for a much longer sentence, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Colin Ratiu is expected to be arraigned tomorrow in Suffolk Superior Court on charges of motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of alcohol, which has a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, and leaving the scene of an accident causing death, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Prosecutors said Ratiu hit Andrew Prior on Tremont Street on Nov. 14, then kept driving his Hyundai Santa Fe toward Brigham Circle as Prior lay dying. Police found Ratiu's SUV - with extensive front-end damage - in his driveway.

Ratiu had been arrested - after an extensive search - on a charge of negligent motor vehicle homicide, which would have meant no more than 2 1/2 years in a county jail.

Police try to stem wave of late-night armed robberies between Jackson Square and Roxbury Crossing

District B-2 reports several gunpoint robberies over the past two weeks in the area between Centre Street and Columbus Avenue in Jackson Square and Tremont Street in Roxbury Crossing:

Most of the robberies have occurred between the hours of 11:30PM and 1:30AM. The suspects have been described as two black males armed with a black handgun. One of the robbery victims noticed a white SUV motor vehicle with occupants inside.

UPDATE: Boston Police report they are looking for a silver or gray Hyundai Santa Fe or similar vehicle, likely with major front-end damage.

Protest over Roxbury Community College arrest

About 25 residents and Roxbury Community College students and professors gathered across the street at the Roxbury Crossing T stop this evening to protest the way a 16-year-old wanted on various charges was subdued by Boston Police a week ago.

Late-night Orange Line riders had their trip through Roxbury Crossing delayed shortly after midnight when a man fell on the tracks at Roxbury Crossing and the MBTA stopped service to let EMTs get him off the tracks. T spokesman Joe Pesaturo said he was not hit by a train and did not come into contact with the third rail.

Four people face knife-related charges after a dispute yesterday afternoon that started at the entrance to the Orange Line station and ended with one of them bleeding from a stab wound inside a nearby Domino's, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

According to the District Attorney's office, the fight began as a three-on-one verbal altercation mid-afternoon. Angel Renta, 19, of South Boston, left the station, but the other three followed him into the Domino's at 1400 Tremont St. There, prosecutors allege, Freddy Peguero, 18, of South Boston, pulled a knife on Renta, but Renta pulled out his own blade and stabbed Peguero first and then fled.

Also facing a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon: Omar Rosa, 21, Roxbury.

Renta was released without bail following arraignment today, while Rosa was ordered held on $750 bail and a 16-year-old whose name was not released because of his age, held in lieu of $250 bail. Peguero, still in the hospital, was not arraigned today. Their next scheduled court appearances are May 7.

So the Roxbury Crossing T stop now has a stylized mural-like thing of the nearby mosque and some people are upset:

As the photographer points out, the Boston public transportation system does not sport crosses, stars of David, or other religious insignia. How did this exception come about? One hopes that Bostonians are not so beat down by ISB litigiousness that they have lost all curiosity about that institution's activities.

Looks like Boston's not an Irish town anymore. This reminds of gang colors and insignia posted all over American buildings, roadways, etc., used as "turf markers."

Oy. I have no love for the the Jew-hating First Amendment deniers at the Islamic Society of Boston, but really, turf marking? Should criminals get outraged that Forest Hills station has a stylized iconish sign pointing to the nearby West Roxbury District Court?

Teen arrested for double stabbing at Roxbury Crossing T stop

Rene Torres, 18, was arrested today on charges he sliced up a couple of other teens at the Orange Line station during the afternoon rush hour on March 6, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office and MBTA police announced today. He was arrested around 1 p.m. today as he walked from his Slayton Way home to the Jackson Square T stop, officials said. Torres is scheduled to be arraigned in the morning on two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in Roxbury District Court.

... I called the MBTA police to tell them I was at Roxbury Crossing and the elevator and escalator were both out. The officer said he'd transfer me to the right place.

He transferred me to customer service voicemail.

I called back, stated that voicemail wasn't going to get me out of the station. He stated that he'd send over an inspector.

The inspector came after about 15 minutes, walked over to the escalator and elevator, pulled out a key, and turned the power back on. I might add that he turned it back on while several able-bodied people were walking up the escalator. They jolted, then screamed at him that he might want to tell people before doing that. ...

BadTransit, meanwhile, describes all the fun he had thanks to the T's inability to let riders know about service outages.
