Savin Hill two-alarm fire displaces nine

The Boston Fire Department reports a fire at 161 Sydney St. did an estimated $500,000 in damage.

Nobody was injured in the fire, reported shortly before 11 a.m. The cause is still under investigation, the department says.

Massive search on Savin Hill for suspects who dropped gun in fight with police

AlertNewEngland reports Boston, Transit and State Police are flooding Savin Hill looking for two men who got into a fight with police, dropped a gun, then fled.

State Police even sent in their helicopter to add in the search for the two men, both described as black and about 6 feet tall, one wearing a red coat with gray sweatpants, the other a white shirt and jeans. Both are considered armed and dangerous.

Police demand a reasonable back story when they catch you in a make-out session on Savin Hill Ave. at 3 a.m.

A local lass and her alleged Quincy beau were hauled off to C-11 early this morning on charges they were engaged in sex for a fee after police did not buy her story they'd gotten frisky after dating "for seven or eight minutes."

Man charged with Dorchester attacks

Boston Police report arresting a Dorchester man for two attacks on women early Sunday and say he is a suspect in a third.

Walter Mains, 31, is scheduled for arraignment in Dorchester District Court for threatening a woman with a gun and attempting to rape her around 3 a.m. at Harbor View Street and Dorchester Avenue, and for approaching a woman but then running off around 1:40 a.m. on Savin Hill Avenue, police said, adding Mains is also a suspect in a rape around 2 a.m. on Savin Hill Avenue near the Red Line station:

The investigation is currently ongoing and addition charges will likely follow. Police are in the process of applying for multiple search warrants and also awaiting results from physical evidence recovered at the scene.

The Dorchester Reporter reports Mains was out on bail for a 2009 sexual attack in Dudley Square.

Stephen Walsh reports a pole came down across Hammond Pond Parkway, blocking three lanes.

Dorchester boat fire visible for miles around

The Boston Fire Department reports a man, 58, and his son were working on their sailboat's motor in Dorchester Bay when it exploded around 5:10 p.m. Saturday.

The man suffered burns; boaters from the Savin Hill Yacht Club rushed out to the boat, moored about 200 yards off shore, to rescue the two.

The plume of black smoke was visible from the Fenway.

DA: Friendship gone sour over drug deal led to death at a T stop

Nhu Nguyen and Derek Matulina were once friends who fell out over money Nguyen felt Matulina owed him for a drug transaction, Suffolk County prosecutors said today. When the two crossed paths at the Savin Hill T stop on May 7, they began to fight and Nguyen pulled out a gun and fatally shot Matulina, according to the District Attorney's office.

Denis Popov reports his Savin Hill condo complex has had a series of break-ins over the past two months, in which somebody breaks in, then looks for a bag in which to carry out all the goodies he finds.

Popov says in his case, the thief made off with a laptop - and his unusual Chrome Soma messenger bag:

That bag is very unique-looking, with a big seatbelt buckle on the strap, and would stick out like a sore thumb on anyone who's not a bike messenger or JP hipster. This happened in Dorchester, so it's pretty safe to assume the guy who made off with my stuff is neither a messenger nor a hipster.

Dorchester man who convinced a pal to give him a ride across town to rob a bank pleads guilty

To charges of bank robbery, that is, not abusing a friendship.

Andrew Higgins, 44, could get up to 20 years behind bars when sentenced in US District Court in October for robbing the Hyde Park Savings Bank branch on Centre Street last Nov. 13. He pleaded guilty yesterday, the FBI reports.

Higgins told a friend he needed to cash a check there and the friend drove him over and then waited while Higgins went inside, robbed the place, then rushed out and told his friend to floor it because of a fight he'd allegedly just had inside. The friend dropped Higgins off at the Shaw's on River Street in Dorchester Lower Mills, then got stopped by a cop in Mattapan who'd heard the radio alert for his car. Meanwhile, Higgins took a cab back to his Savin Hill apartment - where police were waiting. Police recovered $2,594.

Nhu Nguyen, 19, was ordered held without bail at his arraignment today in Dorchester District Court on charges he pumped a single fatal bullet into Derek Matulina's chest at the Savin Hill T stop the day before Mother's Day.

Man charged with Savin Hill T-stop murder

Boston Police report arresting a Dorchester teen on charges he shot another teen to death on the platform of the Savin Hill Red Line station.

Police say Nhu Nguyen, 19, fled to Portland, Maine, where he was arrested last night.

Nguyen is charged with firing a single fatal shot into Derek Matulina during a brawl in which Matulina was attacked by several other teens around 2 p.m. on Saturday.

He's scheduled for arraignment today in Portland on a fugitive-from-justice charge. A date for his arraignment in Dorchester District Court on murder charges has yet to be set, police say, adding MBTA Transit Police and the Suffolk County District Attorney's office were also involved in the investigation.

The Dorchester Reporter has details on a Savin Hill Civic Association meeting next week with city officials and police about the fight, murder and the Savin Hill Avenue house many of the alleged participants in the fight fled to afterwards.
