Abercrombie

A former Dorchester resident was sentenced to 18-20 years in prison today after he admitted he raped a woman walking home from the Savin Hill T stop on Oct. 30, 1992.

Terry Abercrombie, now 52, had avoided detection until 2012, when a DNA database run by the FBI found a match with DNA evidence the Suffolk County District Attorney's office had submitted to the database in 2006.

DA Dan Conley said the DNA match and additional evidence convinced Abercrombie to plead guilty.

According to the DNA's office, Abercrombie pulled the woman into a driveway off Cushing Avenue, took cash, then raped her:

The Boston Licensing Board decided yesterday the ratio of wine and beer to cheese and other foods at Savin Hill Enterprise, 1047 Dorchester Ave., did not violate any board regulations.

The shop, which opened earlier this year, had been cited by police in July for using too much shelf and refrigerator space for alcohol; police said that seven of eight shelves marked "food" on a store floor plan were actually being used for beer and wine.

On July 17, a Boston Police detective entered Savin Hill Specialities, the new wine-and-cheese shop at 1047 Dorchester Ave., and took careful note of how many shelves were used for wine and beer and how many for food items. He looked in the shop's coolers to compare the ratio of chilled alcoholic beverages to soda and water.

Transit Police report that around 5 p.m., somebody walked into the Savin Hill Red Line station, saw two people he wanted to shoot, took out a gun and began firing.

He missed, whereupon both his intended targets and he fled, police say. Police say they are continuing to look for him. About 40 minutes later, however, Cynthia Pesantez watched Boston Police take somebody into custody a few blocks away from the station.

UPDATE: Boston Police report the man died. The Herald reports he was Michael DePina.

Around 8:45 p.m. a man on a motorcycle crashed on Taft Street near Dorchester Avenue. As he was taken away with serious injuries, police found a gun near his motorcycle, then another gun near Pleasant Street.

Police locked down Taft Street - residents were not allowed out of their homes - as they conducted a line search looking for any additional evidence in yards and under cars.

Boston Magazine reports on a Red Line bar crawl tomorrow sponsored by Future Boston to promote late-night T service. Well, to be exact, they'll start in a bar on Savin Hill, present CharlieCards for a ride to a bar downtown and then finish up with sushi in Harvard Square.

Ed. note: What would an Orange Line equivalent be? Start at Forest Hills, where the young'uns would start at the Dogwood or Eugene O'Neill's, the hardened barflies at JJ Foley's Fireside Tavern or the Drinking Fountain, but then where from there?

Seems somebody removed the Martin Richard memorial banner from the bridge to Savin Hill over the Expressway. Its creators are wondering why - and where it is.

The homicide unit and the arson squad are investigating what exactly killed a person whose body was found inside a burning car shortly before 4 a.m. at Davitt Street and Savin Hill Avenue, according to Stanley Staco and Boston EMS Incidents.

Ed. note: I've closed the comments on this post. A lot of things were said about the dead man that may or may not be true, but which probably aren't appropriate to post about somebody who seems to have died in a tragic accident, rather than some criminal activity.

Police responded to the parking lot at 1141 Dorchester Ave. shortly before 4 p.m. after several shots were fired. About 15 minutes later, a gunshot victim showed up at Boston Medical Center, where he arrived in the same sort of vehicle seen fleeing the shooting site.

The Boys and Girls Club on Deer Street locked its doors until police gave the all clear.
