Gay Games not married to Boston

Bay Windows reports the Federation of Gay Games today chose Cleveland for the 2014 Gay Games.

Mike Ross: Cops in Fens going after vandals and slobs, not gays

City Councilor Mike Ross answers the Bay Windows article alleging harassment of gay cruisers in the reeds:

... I want to be clear that nothing is more important than protecting the rights of a group that, in the past, has been targeted for discrimination. The clearing of the tall reeds, or phragmites, and the increased police patrols around the Fenway Gardens is not so much a civil rights issue as it is an issue that goes to the core of what makes Boston vibrant, attractive, and accessible to all. Community gardens are important gems within a neighborhood, attracting positive outdoor activity within an urban environment and encouraging families -- both gay and straight -- to enjoy our green spaces. Residents feel unsafe in their own gardens. They have found condoms, needles, and garbage, and are afraid to bring their children to the Fens. Residents have a legitimate complaint. ...

Why more cops in the Fens doesn't mean a crackdown on gays

Last week, Bay Windows wrote: Boston P.D. cracking down on cruising in the Fens.

Mike Mennonno, himself gay, doesn't think so, because gays looking for some anonymous fun aren't the target of the police. He praises the BPD for attempting to crack down on vandals who have been rampaging through the Victory Gardens - where he has a plot:

... And the truth is, there are people who enjoy other aspects of the park, and they, too, need protection. Scream "police state!" all you want, we have more septuagenarians gardening in the Fens than you can shake a stick at. Shouldn't they be able to take a lively part in their community without fear of violence? ...

Norwood woman ordered to stop harassing gay neighbor

A Norfolk Superior Court judge yesterday ordered Deborah May to stop spreading false rumors that a neighbor in their Norwood apartment complex is a pedophile, stop screaming anti-gay epithets at him and stop filing false complaints with the local police department about him, the state Attorney General's office reports.

The state successfully sought a civil-rights injunction against May for her activities, which allegedly started in November of 2007. The injunction orders May to cease all communications with the man and his family and to stay at least 500 feet away from his workplace.

Despite the sign, all not welcome at downtown church

Scott Pomfret, author of Since My Last Confession: A Gay Catholic Memoir, reports he is no longer welcome as a volunteer at St. Anthony's Shrine in Downtown Crossing, despite eight years of service, because of the publicity surrounding his book. Also, the shrine has disbanded its GLBT Spirituality Group:

... Wednesday, Sept. 17, I went to the Shrine for the regularly scheduled meeting of the GLBT Spirituality Group, which met every third Wednesday of the month. As soon as I entered the Shrine's lobby, I knew something was amiss. Our little paper rainbow flags that point the way to the meeting room were absent.

When I got to the meeting room, the door was half-closed. A sign taped to the door indicated that the Lay Ministry Training Committee was meeting. The Committee trains new lectors and Eucharistic ministers. I have been an important member of this group for five years. Yet I was given no notice of the meeting. I instantly realized I had been deliberately excluded. ...
