Rat awaits exam at MSPCA-Angell.The MSPCA reports a Cape woman who bought two rats at a pet store to keep them from becoming snake snacks showed up at Angell Memorial in Jamaica Plain today with 69 more rats than she started out with.

The MSPCA reports all 71 rats are in good shape and that it is now looking for homes for them - so presumably that hipster lady with the Red Line snake need not apply.

Rats: Boston abandons idea of limiting hours trash can be on the street

Matt Conti reports a proposal that would have limited North End residents to 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. for putting out trash died because the city and the contractor couldn't work out the union and contract changes that would have required. Councilor Sal LaMattina initially proposed the idea as a way of reducing the hours during which rats can gorge themselves silly on neighborhood garbage - residents can now put their trash out as early as 5 p.m. the night before each of the neighborhood's three-times-a-week pickups.

NorthEndWaterfront.com reports on a two-hour neighborhood meeting about trash and rats; says Councilor LaMattina has made some calls to particularly offensive property owners to get them to clean up their property. Other offenders get a "Letter from the Councilor" with tips on making their refuse less rat-happy.

Chris Kulikoski, running against District 1 (North End, East Boston, Charlestown) incumbent Sal LaMattina, says the city needs to find new ways to combat rats. He said "rats as big as cats" scurry around near his Charter Street home after dark and that the city might have to take steps such as banning leaving trash on the street overnight: "Presently, trash sits out all night for next-day collection. Since rats are nocturnal, it only makes sense not to leave trash out overnight for rates to feast on. These are not the feasts the North End should be known for."
