A student was robbed of cash and then sliced in the hand around 9:10 p.m. at Ruggles and Tremont streets, the latest violent incident within a quick walk of the Boston Police headquarters building.

Police are looking for a black man with a goatee in a dark hoodie, who wielded the knife and who may also be packing a gun, and a black woman, also in a dark hoodie.

There was another two-on-one knifepoint robbery in the lower busway at the Ruggles T stop Sunday night.

UPDATE: The Fire Department reports investigators have determined the cause to be - you are sitting down: Careless disposal of a cigarette.

A fire in a 25th-floor apartment at Tremont on the Common, 151 Tremont St., sparked a three-alarm response as firefighters raced upstairs to evacuate residents, some of whom took refuge on their balconies.

The Boston Fire Department reports a fire in second-floor trash chute at 474 Tremont St. shortly before 7 p.m. went to two alarms before being extinguished. Damage was estimated at $50,000.

The Boston Licensing Board yesterday approved a request from Sal's Pizza on Tremont Street to stay open until midnight.

Residents of a neighboring condo building objected to the extension from the current 10 p.m. closing time, claiming the new hours would attract the wrong element to the downtown street. The longer hours had the support of other downtown residents and neighboring businesses and institutions.

The Boston Licensing Board decides Thursday whether to grant a series of liquor license transfers that would begin with a bar in the Alley off Boylston Street giving up its liquor license and end with a new "eclectic" pub opening at the intersection of Tremont Street and Mass. Ave.

Under the deal, the Lyons Group would sell its all-alcohol license for Suite to the owners of the Parish Cafe II at Tremont and Mass. Ave., who in turn would sell their current beer, wine and liqueurs license to the operator of a new restaurant, called Poe's Pub, across the street.

UPDATE: Man arrested, but not for the shooting.

Boston Police tweet somebody was shot at 1029 Tremont St. shortly after 7 p.m. tonight, and that the homicide unit is now investigating, which means the victim was seriously wounded.

Beth Freeman reports she heard three shots. Police arrived "within seconds" and then chased a man down Sussex Street, she said.

MBTA Transit Police say this is the guy who repeatedly stabbed somebody on a 23 bus at Ruggles and Tremont streets yesterday evening, then fled toward the Whittier Street project. He's described as 25 to 30, 5'7" and weighing between 185 and 220 lbs, with dreadlocks.

UPDATE: MBTA Transit Police tweet they've caught the guy.

Channel 7 tweets a man was stabbed several times around 6:30 p.m. on a bus on Tremont Street at Ruggles Street - a photo the station posted shows the bus stopped in front of Boston Police headquarters. The victim is expected to survive.

An expired inspection sticker proved the undoing of four alleged gang members, including one braced for action, late Wednesday night, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

According to a statement from the DA's office, officers on patrol near the Lenox Street housing project had just gotten word a carful of toughs from the Washington Street gang were on their way over, when they spotted a black Acura Legend with tinted windows and an expired inspection sticker at Hammond and Tremont streets around 11 p.m.

Tremont Street coffehouse says it will serve Portland's best coffee

The Boston Licensing Board this week granted a license to a pair of entrepreneurs who think Tremont Street is ripe for a high-end coffeehouse.

The Thinking Cup, 165 Tremont St., hopes to open by the end of the month, serving "high-end coffee" along with froyo, croissants and light sandwiches. The outlet says it will be the first in the Boston area to serve Stumptown Coffee, which it modestly claims is the best coffee in the world.

Also in the works: Four outdoor cafe tables. Because they would be on the public sidewalk, however, they have to be approved by the city's Public Improvement Commission.
