State charges foreclosure, lending fraud by giant lenders

Attorney General Martha Coakley today announced a lawsuit against five large banks and mortgage companies, alleging they falsified documents, seized property they had not right to, lied to borrowers about refinancing programs and attempted to circumvent state property registration laws by using a private clearinghouse - which is also named in the complaint.

The suit, filed in Suffolk Superior Court, names Bank of America, Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase, Citi, GMAC and the Mortgage Electronic Registration System.

City Councilor Ayanna Pressley and state Attorney General Martha Coakley say a $28,500 fine imposed on the Cure Lounge will be split among four groups that provide scholarships and help to black high school students who want to go to college.

The state began investigating the downtown club after Pressley complained about the way it shut its doors during an event for black Harvard alumni following the annual football game against Yale.

Attorney General Martha Coakley is blasting Pabst Brewing for a new line of fruity malt liquors that contain the alcohol equivalent of five beers in just one can.

At a time when we're fighting to prevent underage drinking and binge drinking, we are urging Pabst to rethink the dangers posed by Blast. We also believe the promotion of this 'binge-in-a-can' is aimed at the youngest of drinkers as well as underage youth.

Coakley, along with 18 other attorneys general, are denouncing launch parties sometimes billed as 18+, along with the colorful packaging, the hiring of Snoop Dogg to shill for the stuff and the use of youth-oriented social media, such as Twitter and Facebook.

Debbie Eappen, whose son Matthew died at the hands of au pair Louise Woodward back in 1997, will join with DAs Dan Conley (Suffolk) and Gerry Leone (Middlesex) to endorse Martha Coakley for re-election as attorney general, today at 10:30 a.m. at Faneuil Hall. In 1997, Coakley was Middlesex DA and prosecuted the case against Woodward.

The Worcester Telegram reports James McKenna, a Millbury lawyer, is talking to Republican officials about running a write-in campaign in the September primaries so he can get on the November ballot to run against Coakley.

Doesn't sound like there's much of a there there, but possibly some lessons-learned sort of recommendations for updates to the state public-records law.

Had a great laugh this morning reading the Boston Herald. First there was this story:

WRKO radio host Howie Carr has lodged a trio of complaints against the station with the state Attorney General's office, seeking unpaid bonuses and a pay raise in the three years since his bosses thwarted his attempt to defect to rival WTKK.

The Herald received the complaints from the Attorney General's office under a Freedom of Information Act request. Carr declined comment this week.

Wait, is this the same Howie Carr that bashes state employees, elected (Democratic) officials and government overall as hacks and taxpayer ripoffs? Why yes it is. But when he has a problem with his employer, where does Howie Carr go? To a government agency and asks help from public employees.

And guess what - those public employees (always hacks in Howie's retread columns) did their jobs and protected Howie's rights (including getting him 2 backpay checks).

The Outraged Liberal got outraged this morning trying to read a Globe story about insurers paying certain hospitals too much money for care that isn't really any better, because an ad for former Harvard-Pilgrim CEO turned gubernatorial hopeful Charlie Baker popped up right over the text.

Tinker Ready, meanwhile, wonders why Attorney General Martha Coakley plans on releasing this report without naming the hospitals that provide Chevy services at Cadillac prices; seems like a massively general hospital overview like that doesn't do much good in solving the issues it raises - which apparently also says hospitals that provide the most care for poor people get paid even less.

Bob LeLievre breaks down Coakley's large win in Boston by neighborhood, along with comparisons to 2006 numbers for Deval Patrick. Some interesting numbers: She lost South Boston, barely took West Roxbury, Charlestown and Tom Menino's redoubt of Readville, but got 96% of the vote in Mattapan and 92% in Roxbury.

At least in Lowell, Brown didn't so much win as Coakley lost
