Connolly to Lead Council's Review of Student Assignment Process

City Councilor John Connolly will lead the Council's review of the Boston Public Schools student assignment plan. His announcement comes days after Boston Mayor Thomas Menino's State of the City Address in which the Mayor called for "a radically different student assignment plan."

Connolly's order will be introduced during tomorrow's City Council meeting. No dates have been set yet for the City Council hearings, but Connolly wants to give parents an opportunity to weigh in on what makes a quality school, the challenges parents face with the current assignment process, and changes parents would like to see.

What if the schools in one neighborhood are all part of what BPS once euphemistically called "the circle of promise?" The last couple of BPS efforts to reform busing all foundered on the issue that one of its new zones would have contained pretty much nothing but underperforming schools. Mayor re-appoints School Committee member who objects to uppity white women

MartinezChannel 25 reports Mayor Menino has given Claudio Martinez of Jamaica Plain another four-year term on the Boston School Committee.

At a School Committee hearing on a school-closing plan in December, 2010, Martinez told a white parent from the doomed Agassiz School to shut up and sit down because if he wanted to hear from a "white privileged woman" he'd let her know.

The mayor also appointed Meg Campbell, founder of the Codman Academy Charter School, to the committee. Until recently, Boston Public Schools basically considered charter schools the enemy, but over the past couple of years, the mayor and school officials have warmed to them; in 2010, Menino made better BPS/charter integration part of his inauguration speech.

UPDATE: Occupiers have begun moving some tents and equipment offsite. Robin, an Occupy Boston organizer, tweets: "We are moving valuables offsite, not decamping. Connolly vote collapses in Hyde Park

Steve Poftak looks at the numbers from Tuesday's election, notices that John Connolly's tally in Hyde Park and the neighboring part of Roslindale dropped more than 1,000 votes from 2009:

What's the explanation here? Well, my best guess would be a certain 60-something Readville resident and civic leader might have been less than fully supportive.

The Herald reports the mayor continues to back plans for a resort casino at Suffolk Downs, but that he'll have to fight off Milford, which is also expected to put in a bid for a gambling emporium.

Ed. question: The Herald actually says the racetrack's owners want to build a "resort-style casino." How is that different from a plain old "resort casino?"
