Washington Street proposal

Rejected proposal by MGFA.

The Zoning Board of Appeal today rejected a proposal to expand the Arboretum Grill building on Washington Street at Mosgrove Avenue by adding three more floors and 14 apartments, saying that while Washington Street in Roslindale could certainly do with more density, the specific proposal was just too dense. Wanted for Nubian Square attack

Boston Police have released photos of somebody they say attacked somebody with a dangerous weapon at 2493 Washington St. in Roxbury around 1:30 p.m. om Sunday.

Wood chipper was busy this week.

Brad Squirrels was among those who attended a rally outside the former Presentation Church on Washington Street in Brighton this morning where a developer tore down a 150-year-old birch tree on the edge of the property. Read more.

The Boston Sun reports that the current owners of the former Alexandra Hotel on Washington Street at Massachusetts Avenue are seeking BPDA permission to use what's left of the historic structures exterior as cladding for 13 stories with 76 condos. The developers last year had proposed 106 "compact" condos, but the Sun reports their current plans call for 33 of the tiny units, with 43 more commodious units.

Some residents of a condo building on Washington Street in the South End today asked the Boston Licensing Board to turn back time for Alex's Pizza kitty-corner across the street - back to the midnight closing hours it had until 2019, when the board actually granted it permission to stay open until 3 a.m. Read more.

Both Roslindale Ace Hardware on Washington Street at Metropolitan Avenue and the Dunkin' Donuts in Roslindale Square are open this morning, so go to the hardware store, get a saucer (a trash can lid would do in pinch), then slide down to the Dunk's for your ice coffee. In your Patriots hoodie and shorts, of course.

Boston Police report they are looking for a man they say went berserk inside N & M Market, 2359 Washington St. in Roxbury when told he had to put on a mask and then, when confronted by the owner, pepper sprayed him. Read more.

Boston Police are looking for a black Mercedes ML350 - and its driver, who plowed into Happy Nails, 149 Washington St. in Dorchester around 9 p.m., somehow managed to get the SUV out of there, then headed towards Columbia Road, with major damage and possibly on fire. ISD was requested to take a look at the building's structural integrity.

Egleston Square residents had long made lemonade out of the ugly lemon of a billboard and its supports in the middle of Egleston Square by turning it into a mini-park with benches and a small free library. But Clear Channel, which blocked off the site with a fence a couple months ago has now put the small site up for sale, for $1.1 million, Jamaica Plain News reports.

1063 Washington St. fire

The Boston Fire Department reports firefighters responded to 1063 Washington St. in Dorchester shortly before 6 p.m. for what turned into a two-alarm fire.

The building was under construction and there were no injuries, the department reports. The cause is under investigation.

The Zoning Board of Appeal today rejected a proposed 31-unit apartment building at Washington and Basile streets that would have offered far more affordable apartments than required and below-market rates to two locally owned businesses now on the site because the building would have no parking for residents.

The action came even as the city looks to eliminate parking requirements for new buildings that offer large numbers of subsidized units as a way of encouraging such apartments. Read more.

Brookline Police report that Patricia Arellano, 63, of Keswick Street in Audubon Circle, was walking across Downing Road at Washington Street when a driver making a right turn from Washington onto Downing hit her around 11:20 a.m. last Friday. Read more.
