Police: Suburban man gets up to ramming speed on Lansdowne Street

Officers on patrol near closing time on Lansdowne Street early this morning arrested a Norfolk man after watching him "running at full speed, run smack dab into the side of a cab that had stopped to pick up a fare," denting the vehicle.

Police say the man then tried to blend into the crowd, but he proved no match for the fleet footed officers, who arrested him on a charge of willful and malicious destruction of property. Police did not hazard a guess as to why he decided to throw himself at the cab.

DA: Visiting New Yorker not part of 'trivial' bar argument that ended with his death

Hector Guardiola, 25, of South Boston, was ordered held in lieu of $75,000 bail at his arraignment today on a manslaughter charge in connection with the death of a visiting New Yorker at the Lansdowne Pub early Saturday, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

According to the DA's office, Guardiola attempted to settle an argument with somebody else over "something trivial" by throwing "a heavy beer glass." Prosecutors say the glass shattered, sending shards into the throat of Michael Dimaria, 23, slicing his jugular vein and causing him to bleed to death.

Guardiola was also arraigned on two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon - the remnants of the beer glass hit another man in the head, slicing his scalp and giving him a possible concussion, and hit a woman, who required stitches to close a gash on her face.

In addition to setting bail, a Roxbury District Court judge ordered Guardiola to surrender his passport after prosecutors said he had given police two different addresses.

If nothing else, employees of Tequila Rain learned today they have to call 911 immediately when a patron starts acting up, even if there's a detail cop right outside.

Boston Licensing Board members excoriated bar workers today for failing to do that during a rowdy Harvard Business School drag party on Oct. 30, when an allegedly out-of-it Harvard Business School student attacked bouncers trying to escort him out.

Second-degree murder sentence in the death of a Lansdowne Street bouncer

A Suffolk Superior Court jury today found Oscar Rosa, 21, of Natick, guilty of second-degree murder in the Nov. 26, 2006 stabbing of Craig Viera outside the Embassy Club the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Rosa was sentenced to life in prison, but will be eligible for parole after 15 years.

Prosecutors alleged that Rosa and his pals were ejected from the club after Rosa had been restrained twice for causing trouble. Viera, the club's head of security, went outside the Lansdowne Street club and attempted to quiet the group down by offering them free admission the following weekend. Instead, prosecutors say, Rosa lunged at Viera, a Framingham resident, and stabbed him in the abdomen, leaving him with a liver injury that led to his death two weeks later from blood clots that formed in his lungs.

Rosa's attorney argued that Viera, a bodybuilder, actually died from steroid abuse.

Michael Femia says good-bye to Lansdowne Street and tries to contain his bile at the assertion that what the street really needs is a Kowloon of Music to attract real acts to Boston:

... Boy, it'll be nice to bring in some top-tier music acts for a change. Just think, all those times I've gone to Avalon or one of the other clubs, it was to see pikers like Morrissey, Beck, Tori Amos, Iron and Wine, Calexico, Liz Phair, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Frank Black, The Tragically Hip, and probably more that I've forgotten. Bring on Nickelback!

Michael obviously hasn't gotten the news that Lansdowne is not exactly seen as a hip, trendy place to visit, unless you are attending a Red Sox game.

Interesting, if futile, tactic against Boston's plan to ban 18+ events after 11 p.m.: Demand the city impose the same restriction on Symphony Hall:

This was no ephemeral threat to the hundreds of young children inside at the time of these stabbings, and a fair and equal application of the Law requires that the owners of Symphony Hall be held as accountable for the actions on the sidewalk outside their venue as the owners of clubs along Lansdowne Street are held for theirs. ...

Boston Police report a man walking near the Christian Science Center yesterday evening was stabbed during a fight over his clothing:

... The victim stated he was walking down Hemenway Street from Boylston Street, when three unknown white males approached him and proceeded to make negative comments regarding his choice of clothing. The suspect confronted the victim and a fight ensued. ...

The victim is in stable condition at Brigham and Women's with multiple stab wounds.

Click on the link for information about a shooting on Lansdowne Street around 2:30 this morning and a case involving a Brighton woman who came back from a trip to California to discover a woman sleeping in her bed. When police arrived, the suspect claimed she owned the property.
