Michael Moniz enjoyed the view from the Roslindale substation towards Adams Park this morning after Historic Boston, Roslindale Village Main Street and Turtle Swamp Brewing formally dedicated the new windows that replaced decades worth of plywood on the Washington Street side of the former trolley substation in Roslindale Square.

The Zoning Board of Appeal today approved changing the main formal use of the Roslindale Square Substation from a restaurant to a beer garden, which will let Turtle Swamp Brewing of Jamaica Plain keep operating there on a more permanent basis.

Turtle Swamp owner John Lincecum says he already has some plans for the space - and the square itself - as big as the new window he hopes to have installed this summer ... Read more.

Flags at Korean and Vietnam War memorial in Adams Park, Roslindale

The Arredondo Family Foundation turned Adams Park in Roslindale into a commemoration of fallen American service members, including putting flags in front of the memorial to Americans who died in the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Parklet next to Fornax

Deb Beatty Mell captured Alan Wright and other volunteers spending the morning constructing the Cohasset Street parklet next to Fornax - a small, shaded space for local shoppers to take a break, eat a bite, sip a cool drink. It's the third year in a row for the parklet, reclaimed from a couple of parking spaces on the street.

Birch Street ready for pilot closing

Birch Street, which lets motorists endlessly drive around the Roslindale Square building where the brewery is going in, will be blocked to cars for several days, starting Tuesday, as Roslindale Village Main Street tests out various configurations for a more permanent effort to create a pedestrian plaza there.

Roslindale Village Main Street reports that with Saturday's forecast calling for downpours, it's moved its annual Easter-egg hunt indoors - not just because parents would dread coming home with muddy kids and their mud-laden eggs, but because all that running around in the rain could damage the turf at Healy Field. The BPL branch in Roslindale Square is set to close later this year for some major renovation work (don't worry - they're keeping the dome). The Friends of the Roslindale Branch Library has been working with local businesses to set up micro-libraries around the neighborhood so people can still get a book to read - and is giving away libraries in a box that residents can put outside their homes to keep the books flowing.

Roslindale Craft Beer Cellar owner Bryan Reeves announced today he's shutting his store in the basement of the Roslindale Square substation. Reeves says he will stay open as long as he still has stock left - which he'll be discounting 25% starting Tuesday. Read more.

Roslindale Village Main Street reports a design firm has begun work on plans to change Birch Street between Corinth Street and Belgrade Avenue into "a permanent, fully landscaped, useable, and pedestrianized community space." Read more.

Shanti, 4197 Washington St., in Roslindale Square, has ended its lunch buffet and is now only open for dinner. People who need some midday curry and naan will need to get to either Himalayan Bistro on Centre Street in West Roxbury or Tikki Masala in Forest Hills.

Roslindale Village Main Street reports that Shaking Seafood, on Poplar Street in Roslindale Square, where Jersualem Trading used to be, has its "soft" opening at 3 p.m. on Thursday. The seafood place specializes in a Cajun style of cooking in which you pick your seafood and your spices, then they cook and shake them for you and you dig in.
