Icy Charles River reflecting the early morning sun

Sure, people's muscles ache from shoveling snow, T trains drop like flies, there's no place to park, it's freezing out there and more snow is on the way, but we still have views like the one JB Parrett captured this morning from the Cambridge side of the Charles River.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Boston and Cambridge firefighters and Boston and State police began rushing to the Mass. Ave. Bridge on a report of a sailboat tipping over in the wind and dumping somebody in the water. Just as firefighters were about to begin their "tech rescue," however, the person managed to get back in the boat and make his way to shore on the Cambridge side - where he was met by troopers and Cambridge firefighters. He declined medical attention.

Hawk Attacks Quadcopter!

Christopher Schmidt reports he was flying his quadcopter over Magazine Beach on Wednesday when a hawk took exception to the craft's existence. Both bird and drone appeared to survive OK (Schmidt says he shut off the rotors to avoid hurting the bird).

Renderings of an Allston Esplanade and new development at Beacon Yards

Renderings from the Boston Society of Architects Beacon Yards Urban Design Workshop

Last week, two teams organized by the Boston Society of Architects proposed that the $260M reconstruction of the Mass Pike in Allston should include a great new public place and civic amenity along the Charles River.

Monday is the deadline to send comments on this project to [email protected]

Images from the BSA presentations and a sample comment letter to MassDOT are online at http://peoplespike.com/AllstonEsplanade/

The EPA reports it's given the Charles River an A- for cleanliness in 2013:

Reflecting nearly twenty years of focused efforts by EPA, state and local officials, private environmental advocacy groups and concerned citizens, this is the first time the Charles River earned a grade higher than “B+”. As with past years, the grade is based on bacterial sampling conducted by the Charles River Watershed Association during the previous year.
