Blue Mass. Group posts comments from the Hyde Park Democrat on how Beacon Hill is broken:

Ask Dan Winslow who is running for state representative in the 9th Norfolk District, fails to mention on his website or in his video, that he is running as a Republican, and fails to mention his longstanding association with the Republican party; as Mitt Romney's Chief Legal Counsel, and as Sen. Scott Brown's legal counsel.

Winslow is a capable guy so the question is not whether he's competent and capable but rather what policies he supports and what policies he doesn't. We'll watch Dan and see if he's willing to be proud of his Republican affiliation and specific about his positions on the important issues of the day.

The Dorchester Reporter reports that 12 of the state reps whose districts cover Boston have filed an amendment to the state budget to revive four Boston Public Library branches now faced with death.

None of the five reps who didn't sign the measure - Marty Walsh (D-Savin Hill), Marie St. Fleur (D-Uphams Corner), Angelo Scaccia (D-Readville), Michael Rush (D-West Roxbury) and Eugene O'Flaherty (D-Chelsea) have BPL branches faced with closing in their districts.

Released yesterday, ready for a vote next week. Includes a provision for slots at Suffolk Downs.

The Outraged Liberal wonders:

... Is the racino proposal really so shaky it cannot stand a public discussion? Or because the bill's new provisions really only affect your own district and a couple of others, do you think no one else need bother themselves with the details? ...

Michael McGee, running to replace Brian Wallace in the 4th Suffolk district (South Boston and part of Dorchester), suggested today that that kid charged with bringing a loaded gun into the South Boston Education Complex and aiming it at pursuing cops might not have done so if the state had a strong law against bullying.

In a statement, he said:

Nick Collins, more recently a business marketing consultant, announced today he is running for the 4th Suffolk seat being vacated by Brian Wallace.

I look forward to a spirited conversation regarding the challenges facing our community and how we intend to address them. My hope is to be the leader who will bridge what is great about our past to the promise of our future.

Other Democrats considering the seat include Michael McGee, Jeffrey Poreda, Jake Bombard and Mark McGonagle. Patrick Brennan is running as a Republican in the district, which also includes a small part of Dorchester.

Proposes two casinos and slots at racetracks; unclear if he wants to put a casino AND slots at Suffolk Downs, which would thrill Tom Menino to pieces.

David Guarino, who knows something about legislative battles over gambling (as former PR guy for former Speaker DiMasi), considers what DeLeo will have to do to flip those reps who voted against casinos last time around.

Marie St. Fleur told the Ward 15 caucus this morning that she won't run for re-election this fall, the Dorchester Reporter reports.

Carlos Henriquez, who has made two unsuccessful runs against Chuck Turner, could run, Gintautus Dumcius tweets.

The Dorchester Reporter breaks the news that state Rep. Willie Mae Allen of Dorchester won't seek re-election this fall.

Democrat Paul Sullivan of West Roxbury said today he is running for the 10th Suffolk seat being vacated by state-Senate hopeful Mike Rush:

As an ADA, I have fought day after day on behalf of victims of violent crime, parents seeking child support and those battling drug addictions. I have served the people of the Commonwealth with the utmost passion and tended to each individual with the proper focus and effort they deserved. I look forward to utilizing my work ethic and hard working attitude that was required of me at the DA's Office into advocating on behalf of the residents here in the Tenth Suffolk District.

Also declared: Kelly Tynan and Matt Benedetti.

The district includes West Roxbury, South Brookline and a small part of Roslindale.

Wicked Local Roslindale reports Kelly Tynan, formerly director of West Roxbury Main Streets and now a teacher at the Conley School, is running for the state representative's seat that Rush is vacating to run for Marian Walsh's state Senate seat. Walsh has yet to say if she's seeking re-election.

Maybe not by itself, but David Bernstein ponders if Wallace might have some issues this fall if you combine Browniemania with hostility toward Wallace over gay marriage and from elephant-memory Tom Menino over Wallace's decision to back Flaherty for mayor. If, that is, Wallace even runs, Bernstein adds.

McGee

Michael McGee, a South Boston lawyer and neighborhood activist, says he'll be taking on incumbent state Rep. Brian Wallace for the Democratic nomination next fall in the 4th Suffolk district, which covers South Boston, Uphams Corner and Harbor Point. In a press release, he says:

My local activism has taught me that much can be accomplished if you are willing to roll up your sleeves and go to work. That is what I have been doing for our neighborhood for years as a volunteer--organizing neighbors, pressuring elected officials, planting trees, raising money, mentoring kids--all to make our neighborhood better for all of us. As your State Representative, I'll work just as hard as the advocate for our community.

Dan Dunn, who lives in Arlington, is not at all happy with his state rep, Jay Kaufman, because Kaufman didn't just vote to make Sal DiMasi house speaker, he did so with relish - and then defended him when the Globe first started asking questions about Cognos:

... End of questions about his integrity, Jay? Really? A grand jury still has some questions. So do I. And they're questions about you.

The South End News reports a newcomer has jumped into the 3rd Suffolk race. Ryan Higginson is in HR at Suffolk and has been involved in the city's Young Bostonian Advisory Council.

By adamg - 2/9/09 - 5:44 pm

Susan Passoni, who made two tries for a seat on the city council, is running for state rep instead this year.

The South End resident today e-mailed potential supporters that she's in the hunt for the seat given up by former House Speaker Sal DiMasi (complete letter below). She filed papers with the state today to create a campaign committee for the May 19 special primary and June 16 special election in the 3rd Suffolk district.

Passoni joins DiMasi aide Aaron Michlewitz, who announced his candidacy in January. Last week, Lucy Rivera, a former aide to state Sen. Tom Birmingham and U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano, filed campaign papers with the state.

Passoni's letter:

Blue Mass. Group runs down prospective candidates for the 3rd Suffolk seat just vacated by Sal DiMasi. So far, the only "official" candidate (new House Speaker Bob DeLeo has yet to set an election date) is Aaron Michlewitz of the North End (Facebook page), DiMasi's constitutent-services director, who filed organization papers with the state on Wednesday and who opened his campaign office today on Endicott Street in the North End.

Other possibilities: Lucy Rivera (former aide to Tom Birmingham and Michael Capuano), Susan Passoni (who ran against Jimmy Kelly for Boston City Council), both of the South End, and Stephen Passacantilli, of the North End, who is currently an aide to City Councilor Sal LaMattina.

Boston Daily reports state Rep. Byron Rushing has once again introduced a bill to strip the Mass. General Laws of a bunch of archaic sections, including ones that declare the Communist Party to be subversive, ban tattooing by anybody other than a physician and make fornication, lascivious acts and sex with an animal crimes (the latter punishable by up to 20 years in jail!).

Unless she wages a write-in campaign in November against Sonia Chang-Diaz - who unofficial results show is the winner in their rematch for the 2nd Suffolk state senate seat.

Click on the link for other Boston results in today's Democratic primaries, including: In the 5th Suffolk (Dorchester and Roxbury) state rep's race, Marie St. Fleur easily beat back longtime politico Roy Owens, while in the 6th Suffolk (Roxbury, JP and Roslindale), incumbent Willie Mae Allen showed Faustina Gabriel what's what. Over in the 10th Suffolk (West Roxbury and South Brookline), it was incumbent Mike Rush in a cakewalk over Pamela Julian.
