Iseut lists the specific stores she'd love to see renting space in the new 'n' improved Dudley Square.

I have a dream. That dream is about a fair shake for everyone regardless of race, sexual preference, gender, ethnicity, or economic bracket but it also includes a quality restaurant open after 6 p.m. and on the weekends, a fish market where fresh fish outnumber fly swarms, and a clothing store where the owner greets me with something gentler than a snarl and a glare as I enter. My dream Dudley would include many of the below orgs/stores/businesses (in no particular order), and if not them, then independently owned galleries and shops with similar measures of creativity and decent customer service - things which are kinda rare in Dudley Square now.

Investigators: Fire near Dudley Square was arson

A Brockton man is charged with setting a one-alarm fire that did an estimated $100,000 damage to a house at 7 St. James St. last night, Boston Police report.

James Stewart, 27, is considered dangerous, and may be on the way to Vero Beach, FL in a black 1992 Lexus LS400 with Florida plates: 9112GE. He may also be with his two-year-old daughter, Harmony.

Firefighters responded shortly before 11 p.m. to find a fire blazing on the first floor. The fire was knocked down about 20 minutes later. No residents were injured, but one firefighter was treated at Mass. Eye and Ear for an ear injury, the department says.

Police say witnesses saw Stewart walking away from the fire.

Hopping in Dudley: New office building proposed across street from Ferdinand project

The Bay State Banner reports on a proposal for a three-story building with retail on the first floor on what is now a vacant lot at Taber and Warren streets. The city broke ground just this past weekend on the project to turn the old Ferdinand building into the new school headquarters and to build a new office building next to it.

Both Ends of Dudley posts photos from yesterday's groundbreaking for the Ferdinand project in Dudley Square, which will become the Boston Public Schools headquarters. The ceremonies included a cake in the shape of the rehabbed building and the new office building next to it.

Not everybody thrilled with city plans to move school offices to Roxbury

Roxbury Wakeup is a site dedicated to the premise that the city's plans to renovate the Ferdinand building as the new BPS headquarters is just a plot to gentrify the Dudley Square area:

This project will essentially put a stop to any future retail and social growth, as well as any possible wealth building within the community. It is a CIVIC MUNICIPAL BUILDING. It is a static linear placeholder for the city’s use. Relocating the Boston Public School headquarters’ 500 employees does not GENERATE local jobs. The jobs are already filled! It is not an organic revitalization component and does not ADD to the fabric of this creative, artistic, historic community, and will systemically drain its energy. It is a micro filler, and not a solution that will successfully address the macro issues of this community. It is GENTRIFICATION.

Proposed alternative: Turn the Ferdinand into a hub of social and multimedia networking that would generate new jobs.

Probably just wishful thinking, but state officials are considering trolley service from Government Center to Dudley

State transportation officials are currently studying ways to improve public transit for people not living within a half-mile of a subway stop in Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan. For the most part, that means better, cleaner bus service (such as express buses along the 28 line) and the expansion of the Fairmount Line.

But ArchBoston points us to some documents that also talk about the possibility of replacing the Silver Line with "light rail" (i.e., a trolley) from Government Center to Dudley and then maybe even extending that to Mattapan. And trolleys running down streets! You know, like the sorts of trolley lines the T has spent all of its existence trying to eliminate. From the minutes of one meeting:

The Bay State Banner reports on the latest plans for the Ferdinand building in Dudley Square, which will feature a brick and glass extension with "DUDLEY" in giant letters on top.

The long shuttered building will become the new home of the Boston School Department on its upper floors, with stores and community space on the first two floor.

Did BPD crackdown in Dudley Square snare innocent liquor-store worker?

Jeff Daniels acknowledges he walked out of his father's liquor store in Dudley Square holding an open bottle of beer on Aug. 12. But, he said, he was only going outside to dispose of the bottle - opened inside the store, he says, by a customer from whom he immediately grabbed the bottle and ordered out of the store.

Unfortunately for Daniels, two police officers on bikes happened to be riding by at that moment and they stopped to arrest him on a charge of drinking in public - and issue a citation to Daniels's father, Richard, longtime owner of Giant Liquors at 2371 Washington St.

Seen running from the scene with a can of spray paint was a stout 60-something Caucasian male wearing glasses, appeared to be running toward Hyde Park.

Fighting over a Wal-Mart and the meaning of Roxbury

Wal-Mart hasn't even said yet it's moving to Dudley Square, but the fight has already started, Chris Faraone reports:

On one side of the battle are residents who are anxious for both work and bargains. In the opposition, there's Mayor Tom Menino, along with a number of lawmakers and a small army of activists. They claim that Dudley is already en route to recovery, and that the area's fragile economic ecosystem would crumble in the shadow of the world's biggest retailer.

And then there's the beast itself. In response to declining revenues at its suburban Supercenters, Walmart has increasingly targeted the urban poor in places like Chicago. Accustomed to getting what it wants, in this case the company hired Nicholas Mitropoulos, an old pal of the mayor, as an advisor, and donated fat sums to local nonprofits — including one headed by a politically influential member of the Roxbury Strategic Master Plan Oversight Committee.

Art, toilet to be unveiled in Dudley Square tomorrow

Dudley Square Main Streets reports June 25 is Art Smart, featuring art, food and entertainment between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. But also, Mayor Menino and MBTA General Manager Rich Davey will be on hand to unveil the Dudley station's newest amenity: A state-of-the-art public restroom.

On Saturday, Derequito went on a tour of the old bus garage at Barlett Yard, a shuttered MBTA facility in Dudley Square that's supposed to be converted into commercial and residential space over the next five years.

Menino: Move BPS to Dudley Square

Mayor Tom Menino today proposed moving Boston Public Schools headquarters from Court Street downtown to the long closed Ferdinand building in Dudley Square, as part of an effort to revitalize the square and consolidate city offices (he's also proposing moving some other city agencies to Court Street and the Boston Fire Department to existing city offices at 1010 Mass. Ave.). Menino would issue bonds to pay for the estimated $115-million cost of renovating the Ferdinand building, which the city has owned for several years now.
