Did BPD crackdown in Dudley Square snare innocent liquor-store worker?

Jeff Daniels acknowledges he walked out of his father's liquor store in Dudley Square holding an open bottle of beer on Aug. 12. But, he said, he was only going outside to dispose of the bottle - opened inside the store, he says, by a customer from whom he immediately grabbed the bottle and ordered out of the store.

Unfortunately for Daniels, two police officers on bikes happened to be riding by at that moment and they stopped to arrest him on a charge of drinking in public - and issue a citation to Daniels's father, Richard, longtime owner of Giant Liquors at 2371 Washington St.

Fighting over a Wal-Mart and the meaning of Roxbury

Wal-Mart hasn't even said yet it's moving to Dudley Square, but the fight has already started, Chris Faraone reports:

On one side of the battle are residents who are anxious for both work and bargains. In the opposition, there's Mayor Tom Menino, along with a number of lawmakers and a small army of activists. They claim that Dudley is already en route to recovery, and that the area's fragile economic ecosystem would crumble in the shadow of the world's biggest retailer.

And then there's the beast itself. In response to declining revenues at its suburban Supercenters, Walmart has increasingly targeted the urban poor in places like Chicago. Accustomed to getting what it wants, in this case the company hired Nicholas Mitropoulos, an old pal of the mayor, as an advisor, and donated fat sums to local nonprofits — including one headed by a politically influential member of the Roxbury Strategic Master Plan Oversight Committee.

Mayor Tom Menino today proposed moving Boston Public Schools headquarters from Court Street downtown to the long closed Ferdinand building in Dudley Square, as part of an effort to revitalize the square and consolidate city offices (he's also proposing moving some other city agencies to Court Street and the Boston Fire Department to existing city offices at 1010 Mass. Ave.). Menino would issue bonds to pay for the estimated $115-million cost of renovating the Ferdinand building, which the city has owned for several years now.

Downtown Crossing not only business district with a large, vacant nothingness at its core

The Phoenix reports on a meeting this week about "the broken brick skeleton" in Dudley Square, otherwise known as the Ferdinand building:

Behind the original five-story structure, on a 33,000-square-foot lot between Washington and Warren streets, is a ditch to rival the universally scorned crater abutting Filene's.

"We hear a lot about the hole in downtown Boston," said City Councilor-At-Large Ayanna Pressley. "But we need to hear more about the hole in downtown Dudley."

15 indicted in crackdown on 'open air drug markets' in Dudley Square

Federal and local officials today announced cocaine-related indictments as part of an effort to curb drug-related violence in the area surrounding the Dudley bus depot and the Orchard Gardens housing project.

Officials say drug activity over the past two years has meant "aggravated assaults, firearm arrests, robberies, and shootings," including last year's murder of Soheil Turner, 15, as he walked to school down Dudley Street.

"The violence associated with gangs, guns, and drugs has already injured and killed too many innocents," Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley said.

The indicted men range in age from 17 to 43 and face a variety of charges related to cocaine possession and distribution. Three remain at large. Details on the charges:

More than one F'ed up site in Boston

Third Decade thinks it's good the mayor may finally do something about the mess that is the Filene's Hole downtown, but wonders when he'll do something about the derelict Ferdinand's building in Dudley Square - which the city already owns:

... C'mon, Mr. Mayor, address development in the city in a holistic manner. What's good for downtown is also good for the neighborhoods. Address our problems as aggressively as you're addressing those where the tourists and suburbanites go. We want progress, too!

Tom Menino signs a woman's windbreaker in Dudley Square today, shortly before participating in an announcement about new bus service. Why? Because she asked him to. He asked if she'd be washing the jacket. Never, she said, adding she'd been looking forward to asking the mayor for the unique autograph.
