The Globe reports the Rutland Square beast has become a 50-lb. behemoth feeding on the garbage it uses its razor-sharp claws to gouge out of the cheap plastic or paper bags many South Enders use instead of the required two-ply bags.

The South End News reports residents have been asked to delay putting their trash out until the morning of pickup to help send the raccoon on its way - and that a neighborhood association has also warned residents with small cats and yap dogs to keep an eagle eye on their pets outside because a hawk has taken up residence in the square.

The hawk that spent a week trapped inside the Andrew stop on the Red Line is scheduled to be released into the wild today, the Wildlife Clinic at Tufts's Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine reports.

A team of faculty, intern and staff veterinarians and fourth-year veterinary students examined the bird shortly after it was brought to Tufts Monday by the Animal Rescue League of Boston, and radiographs were taken on Tuesday. The bird suffered no broken bones and was treated for a minor abrasion on its wing.

"The Cooper's Hawk was brought to us in shock and dehydrated from living in the MBTA station, but was otherwise healthy," said Dr. Florina Tseng, DVM, director of the Tufts Wildlife Clinic. "So often we see birds of prey that are far worse off."

After more than a week trapped inside the Andrew T stop, a red-tailed hawk was successfully captured with the help of a professional bird-catching company, according to the Animal Rescue League of Boston, which tweets:

The hawk from the MBTA station has some head & eye trauma, but is in relatively good condition. It is being kept comfortable. X-rays pending.

The Globe reports Boston Police closed off a section of sidewalk at Clarendon and Stuart yesterday when "an injured red-tailed hawk touched down, possibly after flying into the side of the Prudential Center." With cool photo of the hawk shaking it off and taking flight.
